56 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
6- passing of Mary Elizabeth Altman Yturria of Brownsville on
7- December 27, 2022, at the age of 97; and
7+ passing of Mary Elizabeth Altman Yturria of Brownsville on December
8+ 27, 2022, at the age of 97; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in York, Alabama, on May 9, 1925, to John and
910 Dorothy Altman, the former Mary Altman grew up with the
1011 companionship of three younger siblings, Dorothy, Eleanor, and
1112 John; as a child, she moved with her family to New Orleans, where
12- she graduated from the Sophie Wright School for Girls; she
13- studied for a year at Louisiana State University, and worked as a
14- flight attendant for Pan American Airways; she married Frank
15- Yturria on May 9, 1947; and
16- WHEREAS, Mrs. Yturria and her husband shared more than
17- seven decades together and raised two daughters, Mary Eleanor and
13+ she graduated from the Sophie Wright School for Girls; she studied
14+ for a year at Louisiana State University, and worked as a flight
15+ attendant for Pan American Airways; she married Frank Yturria on
16+ May 9, 1947; and
17+ WHEREAS, Mrs. Yturria and her husband shared more than seven
18+ decades together and raised two daughters, Mary Eleanor and
1819 Dorothy; they lived for two years in the Philippines, where
1920 Mr. Yturria was deployed as an air force reservist, before the
20- family settled in Brownsville; Mrs. Yturria was later blessed
21- with three grandchildren, George, Leslie, and Alexandra, as well
22- as five great-grandsons, Daniel, Isaac, Colin, Alexander, and
23- Ben; and
24- WHEREAS, A resident of Brownsville for 75 years,
25- Mrs. Yturria sought opportunities to give back to the community;
26- she held leadership positions in charitable organizations
27- focused on historic preservation, the arts, literacy, health,
28- safety, and education, and she and Mr. Yturria proudly served as
29- cofounders of the Republican Party of Cameron County; through the
30- years, Mrs. Yturria played a role in the creation of a number of
31- civic organizations as well, and she and her husband were
32- recognized for their efforts to promote education in the Rio
33- Grande Valley with the dedication of the Mary & Frank Yturria
34- Elementary School; in addition to various other accolades, she
35- was honored by the City of Brownsville's proclamation of May 9,
36- her birthday, as Mary Yturria Day; and
37- WHEREAS, A woman of strong faith, Mrs. Yturria was a
38- lifelong member of the Church of the Advent, Episcopal, in
39- Brownsville; in her leisure time, she enjoyed gardening,
40- traveling, cooking, and entertaining, and she instilled a
41- passion for creative pursuits in her daughters and
42- grandchildren; and
21+ family settled in Brownsville; Mrs. Yturria was later blessed with
22+ three grandchildren, George, Leslie, and Alexandra, as well as five
23+ great-grandsons, Daniel, Isaac, Colin, Alexander, and Ben; and
24+ WHEREAS, A resident of Brownsville for 75 years, Mrs. Yturria

4342 WHEREAS, Mary Yturria touched countless lives through her
44- kind and generous service to others, and all those who were
45- blessed to share in the warmth of her affection will forever hold
46- her close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
47- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
48- Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Mary Elizabeth
49- Altman Yturria and extend sincere sympathy to her family and
50- friends; and, be it further
43+ kind and generous service to others, and all those who were blessed
44+ to share in the warmth of her affection will forever hold her close
45+ in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
46+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
47+ hereby pay tribute to the memory of Mary Elizabeth Altman Yturria
48+ and extend sincere sympathy to her family and friends; and, be it
49+ further
5150 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
52- prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
53- this day, it do so in memory of Mary Yturria.
