5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
26 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3- recognize Blinn College on the occasion of its 140th
4- anniversary; and
7+ recognize Blinn College on the occasion of its 140th anniversary;
8+ and
59 WHEREAS, Blinn College opened its doors in 1883 as Mission
610 Institute; the institution originally served as a Methodist
711 ministry school for young men; over the next few years, secular
812 courses were added, and in 1888, the Institute was made
913 coeducational; the name was changed to Blinn College in 1934, and
1014 in 1937, Blinn College became the first county-owned junior
1115 college district in Texas; today, it serves as one of the state's
1216 largest public community college districts and a premier
1317 academic establishment for Texans; and
1418 WHEREAS, With campuses in Brenham, Bryan, Schulenburg, and
1519 Sealy and with The Texas A&M University System RELLIS Campus,
1620 Blinn College offers freshman- and sophomore-level courses, as
1721 well as a variety of training programs; the college has received
1822 national recognition for affordability, with tuition and fees
1923 that are almost 40 percent less than those of the average state
2024 university in Texas; and
2125 WHEREAS, Blinn College started with three students in 1883
2226 and has grown to serve a diverse body of 17,000 students across
2327 five campuses; the college offers high-quality education and
2428 training in a broad range of disciplines for students in Central
2529 Texas, and it has helped to provide opportunities for students to
2630 shape their futures by learning the skills they need to discover
2731 and succeed in their careers; and
2832 WHEREAS, Blinn College has played an important role in
2933 higher education in Texas for 140 years, and it is truly fitting
3034 that this exemplary institution be celebrated for its many
3135 contributions to our state; now, therefore, be it
3236 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3337 Legislature, hereby commend the administrators, faculty, and
3438 staff of Blinn College on their outstanding commitment to
3539 excellence in education and extend to all congratulations on the
3640 school's 140th anniversary and best wishes for success in the
3741 years ahead; and, be it further
3842 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3943 Blinn College as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
