2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries of Dallas is celebrating its |

3 | 3 | | 100th anniversary in 2023, providing a fitting opportunity to |
---|
4 | 4 | | recognize the organization for its myriad contributions to the |
---|
5 | 5 | | North Texas region; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The inaugural Goodwill organization in Texas was |
---|
7 | 7 | | established in 1923 in Dallas when a group of women from the |
---|
8 | 8 | | Southern Methodist Church held a clothing drive as a fundraising |
---|
9 | 9 | | project; the project became a successful operation, and it was |
---|
10 | 10 | | later named Goodwill Industries of Dallas; executive director |
---|
11 | 11 | | Gerald Clore envisioned the expansion of Goodwill across the Lone |
---|
12 | 12 | | Star State, and the Goodwill Industries of San Antonio and |
---|
13 | 13 | | Houston opened their doors in 1945; today, Goodwill encompasses |
---|
14 | 14 | | more than 140 locations in Texas and is part of an international |
---|
15 | 15 | | network; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Dallas Goodwill's donated goods program |
---|
17 | 17 | | provides employment by offering work through the recycling and |
---|
18 | 18 | | reselling of material donations in stores, while keeping |
---|
19 | 19 | | millions of pounds of reusable items out of landfills; every |
---|
20 | 20 | | dollar that is generated from its retail stores is invested back |
---|
21 | 21 | | into creating employment opportunities for individuals with |
---|
22 | 22 | | disabilities and disadvantaging conditions; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The Dallas Goodwill's workforce development |
---|
24 | 24 | | program provides assessments, education, coaching, and career |
---|
25 | 25 | | placement for North Texans; moreover, the organization offers |
---|
26 | 26 | | job training and employment for people from all walks of life, |
---|
27 | 27 | | including the working poor and the underemployed, formerly |
---|
28 | 28 | | incarcerated individuals who are reentering the workforce, and |
---|
29 | 29 | | those who haven't earned a GED or the high school equivalency; |
---|
30 | 30 | | Dallas Goodwill's day habilitation services utilizes an |
---|
31 | 31 | | interactive classroom setting to support adults with |
---|
32 | 32 | | developmental disabilities and to help them gain academic, |
---|
33 | 33 | | living, social, and basic money management skills; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, For a century, Goodwill Industries of Dallas has |
---|
35 | 35 | | played an important role in the North Texas community, changing |
---|
36 | 36 | | lives through the power of meaningful work and equipping people |
---|
37 | 37 | | with the tools they need to reach their full potential as engaged |
---|
38 | 38 | | and productive members of society; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of |
---|
41 | 41 | | Goodwill Industries of Dallas and extend to all those associated |
---|
42 | 42 | | with the organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be |
---|
43 | 43 | | it further |

44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
