11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 529
22 WHEREAS, The observance of World War II Veterans Capitol Day
33 on May 11, 2023, provides an opportunity to honor brave members of
44 the Greatest Generation for their selfless service; and
55 WHEREAS, In December 1941, the United States was drawn
66 into the most devastating and consequential conflict in human
77 history; then-Texas Governor Coke R. Stevenson predicted that
88 Texans would rise proudly to the challenge of defending their
99 country, and he was proved correct by the long lines of men
1010 waiting eagerly to enlist at recruiting centers around the
1111 state; and
1212 WHEREAS, Although Texas in that era had but five percent of
1313 the nation's population, it provided seven percent of armed
1414 forces personnel; Texas A&M University produced more officers
1515 than both of the extant military academies together; by the end
1616 of the war, 750,000 Texans, including 12,000 women, had
1717 contributed to victory over enemy forces; the majority of these
1818 service members were in the U.S. Army and the Army Air Force, but
1919 nearly a quarter served in other branches; over 22,000 Texans
2020 made the ultimate sacrifice, a third of this number in the navy,
2121 marines, or coast guard; and
2222 WHEREAS, Individual Texans fought with great valor in all
2323 the theaters of the war, and 33 were awarded the Medal of Honor;
2424 one such honoree, Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy of Farmersville, was
2525 the most highly decorated American of the Second World War; more
2626 than 150 generals and 12 admirals were either natives or
2727 residents of Texas, among them the supreme Allied commander in
2828 Europe, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Denison native who was
2929 stationed at Fort Sam Houston when the war began; Chester W.
3030 Nimitz, appointed commander of the Pacific Fleet following the
3131 attack on Pearl Harbor, was born in Fredericksburg and descended
3232 from a pioneer Texas German family; and
3333 WHEREAS, According to the National World War II Museum, as
3434 of 2022, 8,200 World War II veterans were living in Texas, the
3535 fifth-highest number of all states in the U.S.; they represent
3636 0.6 percent of the state's total veteran population of
3737 approximately 1,400,000; and
3838 WHEREAS, Inspired by a deep sense of patriotism and love
3939 for democracy, the veterans of World War II answered their
4040 nation's call to duty, and it is indeed fitting to express our
4141 enduring respect and admiration for their courage and
4242 immeasurable fortitude; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
