2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The observance of World War II Veterans Capitol Day |

3 | 3 | | on May 11, 2023, provides an opportunity to honor brave members of |
---|
4 | 4 | | the Greatest Generation for their selfless service; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, In December 1941, the United States was drawn |
---|
6 | 6 | | into the most devastating and consequential conflict in human |
---|
7 | 7 | | history; then-Texas Governor Coke R. Stevenson predicted that |
---|
8 | 8 | | Texans would rise proudly to the challenge of defending their |
---|
9 | 9 | | country, and he was proved correct by the long lines of men |
---|
10 | 10 | | waiting eagerly to enlist at recruiting centers around the |
---|
11 | 11 | | state; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Although Texas in that era had but five percent of |
---|
13 | 13 | | the nation's population, it provided seven percent of armed |
---|
14 | 14 | | forces personnel; Texas A&M University produced more officers |
---|
15 | 15 | | than both of the extant military academies together; by the end |
---|
16 | 16 | | of the war, 750,000 Texans, including 12,000 women, had |
---|
17 | 17 | | contributed to victory over enemy forces; the majority of these |
---|
18 | 18 | | service members were in the U.S. Army and the Army Air Force, but |
---|
19 | 19 | | nearly a quarter served in other branches; over 22,000 Texans |
---|
20 | 20 | | made the ultimate sacrifice, a third of this number in the navy, |
---|
21 | 21 | | marines, or coast guard; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Individual Texans fought with great valor in all |
---|
23 | 23 | | the theaters of the war, and 33 were awarded the Medal of Honor; |
---|
24 | 24 | | one such honoree, Lieutenant Audie L. Murphy of Farmersville, was |
---|
25 | 25 | | the most highly decorated American of the Second World War; more |
---|
26 | 26 | | than 150 generals and 12 admirals were either natives or |
---|
27 | 27 | | residents of Texas, among them the supreme Allied commander in |
---|
28 | 28 | | Europe, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Denison native who was |
---|
29 | 29 | | stationed at Fort Sam Houston when the war began; Chester W. |
---|
30 | 30 | | Nimitz, appointed commander of the Pacific Fleet following the |
---|
31 | 31 | | attack on Pearl Harbor, was born in Fredericksburg and descended |
---|
32 | 32 | | from a pioneer Texas German family; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, According to the National World War II Museum, as |
---|
34 | 34 | | of 2022, 8,200 World War II veterans were living in Texas, the |
---|
35 | 35 | | fifth-highest number of all states in the U.S.; they represent |
---|
36 | 36 | | 0.6 percent of the state's total veteran population of |
---|
37 | 37 | | approximately 1,400,000; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Inspired by a deep sense of patriotism and love |
---|
39 | 39 | | for democracy, the veterans of World War II answered their |
---|
40 | 40 | | nation's call to duty, and it is indeed fitting to express our |
---|
41 | 41 | | enduring respect and admiration for their courage and |
---|
42 | 42 | | immeasurable fortitude; now, therefore, be it |

43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |

44 | 44 | | Legislature, hereby recognize May 11, 2023, as World War II |

45 | 45 | | Veterans Capitol Day and encourage all residents of the Lone Star |
