11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 536
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Anabell Cardona, the president and chief executive
44 officer of Valley Grande Institute for Academic Studies, which
55 recently received the Teach for America Institutional Catalyst
66 Award; and
77 WHEREAS, Anabell Cardona began operating Valley Grande
88 Institute of Weslaco in 2001, and in 2007, the school was renamed
99 Valley Grande Institute for Academic Studies; the school's
1010 vocational nursing program had served as the foundation of the
1111 institute since its opening in 1992, and Anabell Cardona devoted
1212 herself to expanding the school's offerings with new instructors
1313 and facilities and with allied health programs in medical
1414 assisting, medical insurance and billing, and patient care; and
1515 WHEREAS, Over the years, the institute has continued to
1616 grow and attract talented students and staff from across the Rio
1717 Grande Valley and beyond; regarded as an excellent learning
1818 institution that trains students to become outstanding medical
1919 professionals, the school now occupies 50,000 square feet of
2020 space in four buildings and is located in downtown Weslaco; and
2121 WHEREAS, In 2020, the institute was awarded a grant by
2222 South Texas Health Systems that was used to upgrade equipment and
2323 for staff development and training; in December of 2022, the
2424 institute and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley partnered
2525 to support the statewide need for medical professionals by
2626 training students from the institute at regional hospitals and
2727 medical facilities; students can receive a stipend while working
2828 at the university's clinical sites, and under the supervision of
2929 the university's educators and staff, students will develop
3030 skills and gain valuable experience while contributing to the
3131 region's health care workforce; and
3232 WHEREAS, Imbued with an uncompromising work ethic and a
3333 commitment to upholding high standards, Anabell Cardona has
3434 demonstrated to her community that achieving one's goals is
3535 within reach through hard work and dedication; her efforts have
3636 empowered countless students in the Rio Grande Valley to pursue
3737 knowledge and to prepare for rewarding careers, and it is truly
3838 fitting that she receive special recognition on her many
3939 contributions to higher learning and to the field of medicine in
4040 Texas; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4242 Legislature, hereby commend Anabell Cardona on her outstanding
4343 leadership of Valley Grande Institute for Academic Studies and
4444 extend to her and to the institution's faculty, staff, and
4545 students congratulations on the school's receipt of the
4646 Institutional Catalyst Award and best wishes for the future; and,
4747 be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4949 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
