2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize Anabell Cardona, the president and chief executive |
---|
4 | 4 | | officer of Valley Grande Institute for Academic Studies, which |
---|
5 | 5 | | recently received the Teach for America Institutional Catalyst |
---|
6 | 6 | | Award; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Anabell Cardona began operating Valley Grande |
---|
8 | 8 | | Institute of Weslaco in 2001, and in 2007, the school was renamed |
---|
9 | 9 | | Valley Grande Institute for Academic Studies; the school's |
---|
10 | 10 | | vocational nursing program had served as the foundation of the |
---|
11 | 11 | | institute since its opening in 1992, and Anabell Cardona devoted |
---|
12 | 12 | | herself to expanding the school's offerings with new instructors |
---|
13 | 13 | | and facilities and with allied health programs in medical |
---|
14 | 14 | | assisting, medical insurance and billing, and patient care; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the institute has continued to |
---|
16 | 16 | | grow and attract talented students and staff from across the Rio |
---|
17 | 17 | | Grande Valley and beyond; regarded as an excellent learning |
---|
18 | 18 | | institution that trains students to become outstanding medical |
---|
19 | 19 | | professionals, the school now occupies 50,000 square feet of |
---|
20 | 20 | | space in four buildings and is located in downtown Weslaco; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 2020, the institute was awarded a grant by |
---|
22 | 22 | | South Texas Health Systems that was used to upgrade equipment and |
---|
23 | 23 | | for staff development and training; in December of 2022, the |
---|
24 | 24 | | institute and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley partnered |
---|
25 | 25 | | to support the statewide need for medical professionals by |
---|
26 | 26 | | training students from the institute at regional hospitals and |
---|
27 | 27 | | medical facilities; students can receive a stipend while working |
---|
28 | 28 | | at the university's clinical sites, and under the supervision of |
---|
29 | 29 | | the university's educators and staff, students will develop |
---|
30 | 30 | | skills and gain valuable experience while contributing to the |
---|
31 | 31 | | region's health care workforce; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Imbued with an uncompromising work ethic and a |
---|
33 | 33 | | commitment to upholding high standards, Anabell Cardona has |
---|
34 | 34 | | demonstrated to her community that achieving one's goals is |
---|
35 | 35 | | within reach through hard work and dedication; her efforts have |
---|
36 | 36 | | empowered countless students in the Rio Grande Valley to pursue |
---|
37 | 37 | | knowledge and to prepare for rewarding careers, and it is truly |
---|
38 | 38 | | fitting that she receive special recognition on her many |
---|
39 | 39 | | contributions to higher learning and to the field of medicine in |
---|
40 | 40 | | Texas; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby commend Anabell Cardona on her outstanding |
---|
43 | 43 | | leadership of Valley Grande Institute for Academic Studies and |
---|
44 | 44 | | extend to her and to the institution's faculty, staff, and |
---|
45 | 45 | | students congratulations on the school's receipt of the |
---|
46 | 46 | | Institutional Catalyst Award and best wishes for the future; and, |
