2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Manuel M. Vela stepped down from his positions as |

3 | 3 | | president and chief executive officer of Valley Baptist Health |

4 | 4 | | System on April 30, 2023, concluding an exceptional tenure with |
---|
5 | 5 | | the organization that spanned more than 19 years; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Vela first joined Valley Baptist Health |
---|
7 | 7 | | System in 2003 and initially served as senior vice president |
---|
8 | 8 | | and chief legal officer; in those roles, he was involved in a |
---|
9 | 9 | | number of major corporate transactions by the health system, |
---|
10 | 10 | | including its purchase of the Brownsville Medical Center and a |
---|
11 | 11 | | joint venture with Vanguard Health Systems; in 2012, he became |
---|
12 | 12 | | president and CEO and spent more than a decade guiding the |
---|
13 | 13 | | organization and overseeing both Valley Baptist Medical |
---|
14 | 14 | | Center-Harlingen and Valley Baptist Medical |
---|
15 | 15 | | Center-Brownsville; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Effective May 15, 2023, Mr. Vela is continuing |
---|
17 | 17 | | his career as the vice president and chief operating officer of |
---|
18 | 18 | | the Texas A&M University Higher Education Center at McAllen, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | his leadership and expertise is sure to serve the center well in |
---|
20 | 20 | | the years ahead; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, A native of Harlingen, Mr. Vela earned his |
---|
22 | 22 | | undergraduate and law degrees from The University of Texas at |
---|
23 | 23 | | Austin, and he subsequently became a partner with his father, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Moises V. Vela, in the Vela and Vela law firm; in all his |
---|
25 | 25 | | endeavors, he enjoys the love and support of his wife, Amy; they |
---|
26 | 26 | | are the proud parents of four children, Brianna, Manny, Thomas, |
---|
27 | 27 | | and Esteban; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Manny Vela has proven himself to be an effective |
---|
29 | 29 | | champion of quality health care in South Texas, and he may take |
---|
30 | 30 | | well-deserved pride in his outstanding record of achievement as |
---|
31 | 31 | | he takes on the challenges and opportunities of his new role; |
---|
32 | 32 | | now, therefore, be it |

33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Manuel M. Vela on his service as |
---|
35 | 35 | | president and chief executive officer of Valley Baptist Health |

36 | 36 | | System and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, |
