2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	recognize May 2023 as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage
4	4	Month and to join the citizens of Houston in celebrating the
5	5	31st anniversary of the Asian Pacific American Heritage
6	6	Association; and
7	7	WHEREAS, The Asian Pacific American Heritage Association
8	8	was founded in 1992 to promote awareness and understanding of
9	9	Asian American and Pacific Islander cultures and histories
10	10	through education, celebration, and commemoration; a
11	11	Houston-based nonprofit organization, the Asian Pacific American
12	12	Heritage Association collaborates with various community
13	13	organizations to celebrate the diverse heritage and culture of
14	14	Houston's residents and to support local educational and
15	15	cultural initiatives; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Originally established by the United States
17	17	Congress as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week, the annual May
18	18	observance celebrates the diverse culture, traditions, and
19	19	history of peoples from the Asian continent and from the islands
20	20	of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia; it was officially
21	21	expanded into a monthlong celebration in 1990 under President
22	22	George H. W. Bush; and
23	23	WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is home to generations of
24	24	Americans who take great pride in their ancestry in Asia and the
25	25	Pacific Islands, and this annual observance provides a welcome
26	26	opportunity to celebrate their significant contributions to the
27	27	prosperity and cultural vibrancy of our state and nation; now,
28	28	therefore, be it
29	29	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
30	30	Legislature, hereby recognize May 2023 as Asian American Pacific
31	31	Islander Heritage Month and congratulate the Asian Pacific
32	32	American Heritage Association on 31 years of cultural preservation
33	33	and celebration in the State of Texas; and, be it further
34	34	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
35	35	organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
