11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 553
22 WHEREAS, The members of the eighth class of Governor
33 William P. Clements Jr. Scholars have distinguished themselves
44 through their commitment to public service and public policy; and
55 WHEREAS, These young men and women are participating in the
66 Clements Legislative Study Program, which is hosted by the Texas
77 Conservative Coalition Research Institute; this exemplary
88 program seeks to train, support, and sustain the next generation
99 of leaders and public servants, instilling in them the values and
1010 work ethic of former governor William P. Clements Jr.; and
1111 WHEREAS, Governor Clements overcame the misfortunes that
1212 befell his family during the Great Depression to create the
1313 world's largest offshore drilling company; he won an upset
1414 victory to become the state's first Republican governor since
1515 Reconstruction, bringing his business acumen to state government
1616 and focusing on such issues as sound budgeting, crime prevention,
1717 and economic diversification; and
1818 WHEREAS, The Clements Legislative Study Program is the
1919 only program of its kind to bring conservative students to Austin
2020 so that they may gain valuable experience in leadership and
2121 public service by working directly with members of the Texas
2222 Legislature; and
2323 WHEREAS, Scholars who have previously completed the
2424 Clements Legislative Study Program now work in a variety of
2525 positions in and around the Texas Legislature, including in the
2626 Texas House and Senate, state agencies, political campaigns,
2727 policy research institutions, and media organizations; and
2828 WHEREAS, The program's eighth class consists of Olivia
2929 Alexander, Morghan Armenta, Sydney Baker, Cameron Castillo,
3030 Mika'ele Castro, Mary Grace Davidson, Bailey Halbert, Noah
3131 Huerta, Jacquelyn Pillow, Zane Prince, Leah Shepherd, Trinity
3232 Smith, Madeline Tillman, and Romana Vargas; and
3333 WHEREAS, By taking part in this special program, the
3434 members of Governor William P. Clements Jr. Scholars are
3535 furthering their understanding of civics, government, and
3636 history, and the knowledge and skills they learn from their time
3737 at the Texas Capitol will serve them well in the years ahead; now,
3838 therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4040 Legislature, hereby commend the members of the eighth class of
4141 Governor William P. Clements Jr. Scholars for their dedication
4242 to public policy and for their service to their state and nation
4343 and extend to them sincere best wishes for success in all their
4444 future endeavors; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4646 prepared for the class as an expression of high regard from the
4747 Texas Senate.
