2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
---|
3 | 3 | | recognize the Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy Foundation, also |
---|
4 | 4 | | known as the IgAN Foundation, and its ambassadors on their many |
---|
5 | 5 | | contributions to the fight against IgA nephropathy; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Immunoglobulin A nephropathy is an autoimmune |
---|
7 | 7 | | disorder caused by the buildup of immunoglobulin A, a protein |
---|
8 | 8 | | that helps to fight infections but also can affect the normal |
---|
9 | 9 | | blood-filtering process in the kidneys; while treatment can slow |
---|
10 | 10 | | the progress of the disease and prevent complications, IgAN has |
---|
11 | 11 | | no known cure; an estimated 20 to 40 percent of affected |
---|
12 | 12 | | individuals will eventually develop end-stage kidney disease and |
---|
13 | 13 | | require dialysis or a kidney transplant; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, More than 30 clinical trials are underway for rare |
---|
15 | 15 | | kidney diseases, including trials for IgAN, yet there is an |
---|
16 | 16 | | ongoing need for research and development of new therapies; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, IgAN often goes undetected, and the need for |
---|
18 | 18 | | increased awareness of the disease and its risk factors is |
---|
19 | 19 | | critical; National IgA Nephropathy Awareness Day on May 14 brings |
---|
20 | 20 | | attention to the disease, and many public health agencies and |
---|
21 | 21 | | medical experts are working to disseminate knowledge about |
---|
22 | 22 | | nephropathy to the general public; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The IgAN Foundation focuses on finding a cure for |
---|
24 | 24 | | IgAN; the foundation seeks to create a supportive patient |
---|
25 | 25 | | community by facilitating patient advocacy and empowering those |
---|
26 | 26 | | living with IgAN to share their stories with others; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The dedicated advocates and organizations that |
---|
28 | 28 | | are raising awareness of IgAN, building support and community for |
---|
29 | 29 | | patients and their families, and embracing hope that new research |
---|
30 | 30 | | will lead to improved diagnoses, treatments, and a cure are |
---|
31 | 31 | | indeed deserving of special recognition on their extraordinary |
---|
32 | 32 | | efforts to encourage and help people living with IgAN; now, |
---|
33 | 33 | | therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby commend the IgAN Foundation and its |
---|
36 | 36 | | ambassadors on continuing the fight against IgA nephropathy; |

37 | 37 | | and, be it further |

38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the |
---|
39 | 39 | | organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
