11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 569
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize the Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy Foundation, also
44 known as the IgAN Foundation, and its ambassadors on their many
55 contributions to the fight against IgA nephropathy; and
66 WHEREAS, Immunoglobulin A nephropathy is an autoimmune
77 disorder caused by the buildup of immunoglobulin A, a protein
88 that helps to fight infections but also can affect the normal
99 blood-filtering process in the kidneys; while treatment can slow
1010 the progress of the disease and prevent complications, IgAN has
1111 no known cure; an estimated 20 to 40 percent of affected
1212 individuals will eventually develop end-stage kidney disease and
1313 require dialysis or a kidney transplant; and
1414 WHEREAS, More than 30 clinical trials are underway for rare
1515 kidney diseases, including trials for IgAN, yet there is an
1616 ongoing need for research and development of new therapies; and
1717 WHEREAS, IgAN often goes undetected, and the need for
1818 increased awareness of the disease and its risk factors is
1919 critical; National IgA Nephropathy Awareness Day on May 14 brings
2020 attention to the disease, and many public health agencies and
2121 medical experts are working to disseminate knowledge about
2222 nephropathy to the general public; and
2323 WHEREAS, The IgAN Foundation focuses on finding a cure for
2424 IgAN; the foundation seeks to create a supportive patient
2525 community by facilitating patient advocacy and empowering those
2626 living with IgAN to share their stories with others; and
2727 WHEREAS, The dedicated advocates and organizations that
2828 are raising awareness of IgAN, building support and community for
2929 patients and their families, and embracing hope that new research
3030 will lead to improved diagnoses, treatments, and a cure are
3131 indeed deserving of special recognition on their extraordinary
3232 efforts to encourage and help people living with IgAN; now,
3333 therefore, be it
3434 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3535 Legislature, hereby commend the IgAN Foundation and its
3636 ambassadors on continuing the fight against IgA nephropathy;
3737 and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
3939 organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
