11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 570
22 WHEREAS, Four students, Matthew Carrizal, Miguel Gonzalez,
33 Courtney Osborn, and Lexi Villarreal, graduated with
44 certificates in interdisciplinary studies from Texas A&M
55 University on May 11, 2023, as members of the inaugural class of
66 the Aggie ACHIEVE program; and
77 WHEREAS, Aggie ACHIEVE, which stands for Academic Courses
88 in Higher Inclusive Education and Vocational Experiences, is a
99 comprehensive transition program for young adults with
1010 intellectual and developmental disabilities who have exited high
1111 school; the program provides participants with an inclusive and
1212 immersive college education with the goal of successfully
1313 preparing them for employment in the community; and
1414 WHEREAS, With the program's launch in the fall of 2019,
1515 Texas A&M became the first university in the state to introduce a
1616 certificate-based higher education initiative of this kind for
1717 young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities;
1818 Aggie ACHIEVE is designed to enroll students for up to four
1919 years, and each student is matched with coursework, internship
2020 opportunities, and extracurricular activities that align with
2121 their academic interests and employment goals; students in the
2222 program take classes, live independently, complete internships
2323 on campus, and work part-time jobs both on campus and in the
2424 College Station community, in addition to participating in
2525 social, athletic, and recreational activities alongside their
2626 fellow Aggies; and
2727 WHEREAS, Created by Dr. Carly Gilson at the TAMU School of
2828 Education and Human Development, the Aggie ACHIEVE program was
2929 established based on research showing that students with
3030 intellectual and developmental disabilities who attend
3131 postsecondary inclusive programs have a higher rate of
3232 employment and earn higher wages than those who do not have such
3333 opportunities; the students enrolled in Aggie ACHIEVE also
3434 benefit from the support and mentorship of their peers in
3535 ACHIEVEMates, an organization formed by Texas A&M undergraduate
3636 students to help ACHIEVE participants reach their goals; and
3737 WHEREAS, The four members of the inaugural cohort of Aggie
3838 ACHIEVE demonstrated hard work, dedication, and perseverance on
3939 their way to completing the program, and they are indeed
4040 deserving of special recognition for this accomplishment as they
4141 embark on the next exciting chapter of their lives; now,
4242 therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4444 Legislature, hereby honor the inaugural graduating class of the
4545 Aggie ACHIEVE program and extend to each student sincere best
4646 wishes for the future; and, be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That official copies of this Resolution be
4848 prepared for the students as an expression of high regard from
4949 the Texas Senate.
