5 | 5 | | University on May 11, 2023, as members of the inaugural class of |

6 | 6 | | the Aggie ACHIEVE program; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Aggie ACHIEVE, which stands for Academic Courses |
---|
8 | 8 | | in Higher Inclusive Education and Vocational Experiences, is a |
---|
9 | 9 | | comprehensive transition program for young adults with |
---|
10 | 10 | | intellectual and developmental disabilities who have exited high |
---|
11 | 11 | | school; the program provides participants with an inclusive and |
---|
12 | 12 | | immersive college education with the goal of successfully |
---|
13 | 13 | | preparing them for employment in the community; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, With the program's launch in the fall of 2019, |
---|
15 | 15 | | Texas A&M became the first university in the state to introduce a |
---|
16 | 16 | | certificate-based higher education initiative of this kind for |
---|
17 | 17 | | young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities; |
---|
18 | 18 | | Aggie ACHIEVE is designed to enroll students for up to four |
---|
19 | 19 | | years, and each student is matched with coursework, internship |
---|
20 | 20 | | opportunities, and extracurricular activities that align with |
---|
21 | 21 | | their academic interests and employment goals; students in the |
---|
22 | 22 | | program take classes, live independently, complete internships |
---|
23 | 23 | | on campus, and work part-time jobs both on campus and in the |
---|
24 | 24 | | College Station community, in addition to participating in |
---|
25 | 25 | | social, athletic, and recreational activities alongside their |
---|
26 | 26 | | fellow Aggies; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Created by Dr. Carly Gilson at the TAMU School of |
---|
28 | 28 | | Education and Human Development, the Aggie ACHIEVE program was |
---|
29 | 29 | | established based on research showing that students with |
---|
30 | 30 | | intellectual and developmental disabilities who attend |
---|
31 | 31 | | postsecondary inclusive programs have a higher rate of |
---|
32 | 32 | | employment and earn higher wages than those who do not have such |
---|
33 | 33 | | opportunities; the students enrolled in Aggie ACHIEVE also |
---|
34 | 34 | | benefit from the support and mentorship of their peers in |
---|
35 | 35 | | ACHIEVEMates, an organization formed by Texas A&M undergraduate |
---|
36 | 36 | | students to help ACHIEVE participants reach their goals; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, The four members of the inaugural cohort of Aggie |

38 | 38 | | ACHIEVE demonstrated hard work, dedication, and perseverance on |

39 | 39 | | their way to completing the program, and they are indeed |

40 | 40 | | deserving of special recognition for this accomplishment as they |
