55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Dr. Lori Cheryl Saunders Broughton, who
77 died November 4, 2022, at the age of 62; and
88 WHEREAS, Lori Saunders was born on June 30, 1960, in
99 Houston, and she grew up in Baytown; a highly esteemed leader in
1010 public education, she led a distinguished career as an educator
1111 and school administrator, and she was a bright light in the lives
1212 of her students, her colleagues, and her many loved ones; and
1313 WHEREAS, Lori earned a bachelor's degree in education from
1414 The University of Texas at Austin in 1982, and that same year, she
1515 was joined in marriage with the love of her life, Ben Broughton;
1616 She began her career as an educator by serving as a teacher at
1717 Crosby Elementary School before accepting a position at Ashbel
1818 Elementary School in Baytown; and
1919 WHEREAS, Dedicated to the profession of teaching, Lori
2020 continued to pursue her own education and acquired a master's
2121 degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 1986; the
2222 following year, she and her husband were blessed with the arrival
2323 of their daughter, Whitney; and
2424 WHEREAS, Lori was a loving and devoted mother, and she
2525 cherished spending time with her young daughter; during this time
2626 she served as an employee of the University of Houston-Clear Lake
2727 before later joining the faculty of Armand Bayou Elementary
2828 School, where she served as a third grade teacher; she later
2929 accepted a position as the assistant principal at Brookwood
3030 Elementary School; and
3131 WHEREAS, Noted for her engaging leadership and her
3232 enthusiastic approach to working with faculty, students, and
3333 staff, Lori was appointed to serve as principal of Silverlake
3434 Elementary School in the Pearland Independent School District;
3535 during her first year as principal, she began pursuing a
3636 doctorate degree in psychology at Texas A&M University, and she
3737 graduated in 2004; and
3838 WHEREAS, Lori led Sam Jamison Middle School and McWhirter
3939 Elementary School during the last decade of her career before
4040 retiring in 2014 from Westbrook Middle School; her passion for
4141 contributing to the quality of public education helped to foster
4242 a sense of mission and camaraderie among administrators,
4343 teachers, parents, and students, and her wisdom, dedication, and
4444 uncompromising work ethic made her an invaluable asset to each of
4545 the institutions she served; and
4646 WHEREAS, Lori and Ben shared 40 years of joyful marriage,
4747 and together they raised their daughter with an abundance of
4848 love; before retiring, Lori and Ben purchased a property near
4949 Dripping Springs, where they established their family home on the
5050 B Lazy 7 Ranch; Lori found great fulfillment in her home and in
5151 time spent with family, and she also volunteered her time as a
5252 mentor to future teachers; and
5353 WHEREAS, A woman of grace, strength, and determination,
5454 Lori was an example to others through her generous and
5555 compassionate spirit and her commitment to upholding her values;
5656 she was a source of inspiration to those around her and made a
5757 positive and lasting difference in the lives of countless
5858 teachers and students, and her memory will be forever treasured
5959 by her loving family and friends and by all who were privileged to
6060 share in her life; now, therefore, be it
6161 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
6262 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
6363 family of Dr. Lori Cheryl Saunders Broughton; and, be it further
6464 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6565 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
6666 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
6767 memory of Lori Broughton.
