5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Dr. Lori Cheryl Saunders Broughton, who |
---|
7 | 7 | | died November 4, 2022, at the age of 62; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Lori Saunders was born on June 30, 1960, in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Houston, and she grew up in Baytown; a highly esteemed leader in |
---|
10 | 10 | | public education, she led a distinguished career as an educator |
---|
11 | 11 | | and school administrator, and she was a bright light in the lives |
---|
12 | 12 | | of her students, her colleagues, and her many loved ones; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Lori earned a bachelor's degree in education from |
---|
14 | 14 | | The University of Texas at Austin in 1982, and that same year, she |
---|
15 | 15 | | was joined in marriage with the love of her life, Ben Broughton; |
---|
16 | 16 | | She began her career as an educator by serving as a teacher at |
---|
17 | 17 | | Crosby Elementary School before accepting a position at Ashbel |
---|
18 | 18 | | Elementary School in Baytown; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to the profession of teaching, Lori |
---|
20 | 20 | | continued to pursue her own education and acquired a master's |
---|
21 | 21 | | degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 1986; the |
---|
22 | 22 | | following year, she and her husband were blessed with the arrival |
---|
23 | 23 | | of their daughter, Whitney; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Lori was a loving and devoted mother, and she |
---|
25 | 25 | | cherished spending time with her young daughter; during this time |
---|
26 | 26 | | she served as an employee of the University of Houston-Clear Lake |
---|
27 | 27 | | before later joining the faculty of Armand Bayou Elementary |
---|
28 | 28 | | School, where she served as a third grade teacher; she later |
---|
29 | 29 | | accepted a position as the assistant principal at Brookwood |
---|
30 | 30 | | Elementary School; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Noted for her engaging leadership and her |
---|
32 | 32 | | enthusiastic approach to working with faculty, students, and |
---|
33 | 33 | | staff, Lori was appointed to serve as principal of Silverlake |
---|
34 | 34 | | Elementary School in the Pearland Independent School District; |
---|
35 | 35 | | during her first year as principal, she began pursuing a |
---|
36 | 36 | | doctorate degree in psychology at Texas A&M University, and she |
---|
37 | 37 | | graduated in 2004; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Lori led Sam Jamison Middle School and McWhirter |
---|
39 | 39 | | Elementary School during the last decade of her career before |
---|
40 | 40 | | retiring in 2014 from Westbrook Middle School; her passion for |
---|
41 | 41 | | contributing to the quality of public education helped to foster |
---|
42 | 42 | | a sense of mission and camaraderie among administrators, |
---|
43 | 43 | | teachers, parents, and students, and her wisdom, dedication, and |
---|
44 | 44 | | uncompromising work ethic made her an invaluable asset to each of |
---|
45 | 45 | | the institutions she served; and |
---|
46 | 46 | | WHEREAS, Lori and Ben shared 40 years of joyful marriage, |
---|
47 | 47 | | and together they raised their daughter with an abundance of |
---|
48 | 48 | | love; before retiring, Lori and Ben purchased a property near |
---|
49 | 49 | | Dripping Springs, where they established their family home on the |
---|
50 | 50 | | B Lazy 7 Ranch; Lori found great fulfillment in her home and in |
---|
51 | 51 | | time spent with family, and she also volunteered her time as a |
---|
52 | 52 | | mentor to future teachers; and |
---|
53 | 53 | | WHEREAS, A woman of grace, strength, and determination, |
---|
54 | 54 | | Lori was an example to others through her generous and |
---|
55 | 55 | | compassionate spirit and her commitment to upholding her values; |
---|
56 | 56 | | she was a source of inspiration to those around her and made a |
---|
57 | 57 | | positive and lasting difference in the lives of countless |
---|
58 | 58 | | teachers and students, and her memory will be forever treasured |
---|
59 | 59 | | by her loving family and friends and by all who were privileged to |
---|
60 | 60 | | share in her life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
61 | 61 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
62 | 62 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
63 | 63 | | family of Dr. Lori Cheryl Saunders Broughton; and, be it further |
---|
64 | 64 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
65 | 65 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
66 | 66 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
