55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Jayne Word Dibrell, who died on April
77 25, 2023, at the age of 93; and
88 WHEREAS, Jayne Word was born on November 16, 1929, in
99 Oklahoma City to Orville and Margie Word; Jayne's father served
1010 in the United States Army as a civil engineer, and the family
1111 moved with him to Fort Belvoir, Virginia, when he was called to
1212 active duty during World War II; and
1313 WHEREAS, Jayne graduated from Tyler High School in 1947 and
1414 briefly attended Gulf Park College in Mississippi before moving
1515 to occupied Japan where her father was stationed; she returned to
1616 Austin in 1949 to attend The University of Texas, where she
1717 joined the Delta Gamma sorority and earned a bachelor's degree in
1818 speech therapy; and
1919 WHEREAS, After marrying Joe Dibrell in 1952, Jayne and her
2020 husband moved to Coleman, his hometown, to begin their life
2121 together; a recent graduate of The University of Texas School of
2222 Law, Joe opened a law practice, and Jayne commenced her career as
2323 a speech therapist in Coleman County schools, always making time
2424 for civic engagement; a committed Democrat and political
2525 activist, Jayne contributed her time and energy to supporting her
2626 husband's successful bid for district judge, speaking on his
2727 behalf at political rallies and later working for phone banks for
2828 several Democratic candidates; and
2929 WHEREAS, Jayne and Joe moved to Austin in 1973, where she
3030 spent 12 years in private practice as a speech pathologist after
3131 earning her master's degree in speech pathology from her alma
3232 mater; an avid gardener, ceramicist, and lover of the arts, Jayne
3333 served as a museum docent for many years; she and her husband were
3434 longtime patrons of ballet, opera, symphony orchestras, and
3535 visual arts in Austin and elsewhere; they were fans of Lady
3636 Longhorns basketball, and they enjoyed traveling on their own and
3737 with Friendship Force International and cooking with their
3838 gourmet dinner group for over 20 years; and
3939 WHEREAS, Jayne was a dedicated mother to her children, Will
4040 and Margaret, and a loving grandmother to her granddaughter,
4141 Elinor, and great-grandsons Colby and Owen; she was a generous
4242 woman who immeasurably enriched the lives of her colleagues and
4343 friends, and her enthusiasm, love of life, and kindness will not
4444 be forgotten by all who were privileged to share in her life; now,
4545 therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4747 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4848 family of Jayne Word Dibrell; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5050 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5151 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5252 memory of Jayne Word Dibrell.
