5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Jayne Word Dibrell, who died on April |
---|
7 | 7 | | 25, 2023, at the age of 93; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Jayne Word was born on November 16, 1929, in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Oklahoma City to Orville and Margie Word; Jayne's father served |
---|
10 | 10 | | in the United States Army as a civil engineer, and the family |
---|
11 | 11 | | moved with him to Fort Belvoir, Virginia, when he was called to |
---|
12 | 12 | | active duty during World War II; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Jayne graduated from Tyler High School in 1947 and |
---|
14 | 14 | | briefly attended Gulf Park College in Mississippi before moving |
---|
15 | 15 | | to occupied Japan where her father was stationed; she returned to |
---|
16 | 16 | | Austin in 1949 to attend The University of Texas, where she |
---|
17 | 17 | | joined the Delta Gamma sorority and earned a bachelor's degree in |
---|
18 | 18 | | speech therapy; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, After marrying Joe Dibrell in 1952, Jayne and her |
---|
20 | 20 | | husband moved to Coleman, his hometown, to begin their life |
---|
21 | 21 | | together; a recent graduate of The University of Texas School of |
---|
22 | 22 | | Law, Joe opened a law practice, and Jayne commenced her career as |
---|
23 | 23 | | a speech therapist in Coleman County schools, always making time |
---|
24 | 24 | | for civic engagement; a committed Democrat and political |
---|
25 | 25 | | activist, Jayne contributed her time and energy to supporting her |
---|
26 | 26 | | husband's successful bid for district judge, speaking on his |
---|
27 | 27 | | behalf at political rallies and later working for phone banks for |
---|
28 | 28 | | several Democratic candidates; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Jayne and Joe moved to Austin in 1973, where she |
---|
30 | 30 | | spent 12 years in private practice as a speech pathologist after |
---|
31 | 31 | | earning her master's degree in speech pathology from her alma |
---|
32 | 32 | | mater; an avid gardener, ceramicist, and lover of the arts, Jayne |
---|
33 | 33 | | served as a museum docent for many years; she and her husband were |
---|
34 | 34 | | longtime patrons of ballet, opera, symphony orchestras, and |
---|
35 | 35 | | visual arts in Austin and elsewhere; they were fans of Lady |
---|
36 | 36 | | Longhorns basketball, and they enjoyed traveling on their own and |
---|
37 | 37 | | with Friendship Force International and cooking with their |
---|
38 | 38 | | gourmet dinner group for over 20 years; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Jayne was a dedicated mother to her children, Will |
---|
40 | 40 | | and Margaret, and a loving grandmother to her granddaughter, |
---|
41 | 41 | | Elinor, and great-grandsons Colby and Owen; she was a generous |
---|
42 | 42 | | woman who immeasurably enriched the lives of her colleagues and |
---|
43 | 43 | | friends, and her enthusiasm, love of life, and kindness will not |
---|
44 | 44 | | be forgotten by all who were privileged to share in her life; now, |
---|
45 | 45 | | therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
48 | 48 | | family of Jayne Word Dibrell; and, be it further |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
50 | 50 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
51 | 51 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |

52 | 52 | | memory of Jayne Word Dibrell. |
