| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Manor are gathering |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | in Austin on May 19, 2023, to celebrate Manor Day at the State |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located 12 miles northeast of Austin on U.S. |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Highway 290 in Travis County, Manor traces its origins to 1836, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | when James B. Manor moved his family from Tennessee and settled |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | on prime prairie land in Central Texas; in 1871, the Houston and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Texas Central Railway Company received 200 acres of land from |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Mr. Manor on which to lay out a town and build a railroad station; |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | a railroad document dated January 10, 1872, declared that the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | town was to be named Manor; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The presence of the Houston and Texas Central |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | railroad greatly benefited farmers, who used its tracks to move |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | their livestock and dairy products; grain, cottonseed, and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | cotton were the principal commodities shipped from the area, with |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | thousands of bales of cotton loaded onto trains every year; the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | railroad helped usher in an era of significant growth for the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | town, which by the mid-1880s had a district school, three |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | churches, and six general stores; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Manor is a vibrant and diverse community |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | with a population of more than 18,000 residents; one of the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | fastest growing suburbs in the nation, it is poised to |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | experience even more explosive growth over the next decade, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | thanks to its abundance of affordable land and its proximity to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the capital city and to such major thoroughfares as Texas State |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Highway 130; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | build an even brighter future, the citizens of Manor are |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas. 88th |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby recognize May 19, 2023, as Manor Day at the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | delegation. |
