55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Billy Joe "Red" McCombs, a celebrated
77 Texas entrepreneur and philanthropist, who died February 19,
88 2023, at the age of 95; and
99 WHEREAS, Billy Joe McCombs, dubbed "Red" for his red hair,
1010 was born on October 19, 1927, in the small West Texas town of
1111 Spur; descended from families of farmers, Red was taught the
1212 value of hard work when he started his first business at the age
1313 of nine; his unstoppable ambition, keen business sense, and
1414 larger-than-life personality made him a legendary figure in
1515 American industry and sports management, and his philanthropy
1616 made the McCombs name synonymous with generosity as well as
1717 excellence; and
1818 WHEREAS, A successful football player during high school
1919 in Corpus Christi, Red earned a scholarship to attend
2020 Southwestern University in Georgetown; he paused his college
2121 education to serve his country with distinction in the United
2222 States Army for two years before returning to enroll at The
2323 University of Texas under the GI Bill; and
2424 WHEREAS, Realizing his true calling as a businessman, Red
2525 left school and returned to Corpus Christi, where he sold cars at
2626 the Ford dealership and excelled as a salesman through his
2727 determination and charisma; he opened his first car dealership at
2828 the age of 29 in 1957, and the Red McCombs Automotive Group
2929 quickly expanded into an automotive empire; the enterprise
3030 became the largest car dealership network in Texas and the
3131 sixth-largest network in the nation; and
3232 WHEREAS, A talented entrepreneur and a shrewd media
3333 visionary, Red purchased San Antonio radio stations in 1972 with
3434 his business partner, Lowry Mays, and together they founded Clear
3535 Channel Communications; Red's intuition for franchise expansion
3636 and his experience in business and advertising helped the company
3737 to grow into the world's largest radio station conglomerate and
3838 to become a dominating power in the industries of outdoor
3939 advertising, live music, and sports management; and
4040 WHEREAS, In 1973, Red purchased the Dallas Chaparrals
4141 basketball team and relocated the team to San Antonio under a new
4242 name, the Spurs; widely recognized as a trailblazer in sports
4343 management, Red turned the Spurs and the Denver Nuggets into
4444 national powerhouses and played a key role in shaping the modern
4545 incarnation of the National Basketball Association; he spent a
4646 number of years as the owner of the National Football League's
4747 Minnesota Vikings, and by investing in Circuit of the Americas,
4848 he was instrumental in the establishment of Formula One racing in
4949 Texas; and
5050 WHEREAS, Generous community benefactors, Red and his wife,
5151 Charline, donated $50 million to The University of Texas business
5252 school, which was renamed the McCombs School of Business, and $30
5353 million to the university's MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston;
5454 Red was a champion for education, and his philanthropy created
5555 countless opportunities for students and young entrepreneurs in
5656 Texas; and
5757 WHEREAS, Red was blessed with the love and support of his
5858 late wife, Charline, for almost seven decades; together, they
5959 were figureheads in the San Antonio community and were greatly
6060 involved in both state and national politics; Red and Charline
6161 were blessed with three daughters, Lynda McCombs, Marsha
6262 Shields, and Connie McNab, and he cherished his eight
6363 grandchildren and his 11 great-grandchildren; and
6464 WHEREAS, An esteemed civic leader and a titan of industry
6565 who created more that 400 businesses, Red McCombs changed the
6666 American automotive trade, professional athletics, advertising,
6767 and radio broadcasting; he embodied the spirit of the Lone Star
6868 State through his love of thinking big and his zest for
6969 deal-making and adventure, and he leaves behind an inspiring
7070 legacy for all Texans; now, therefore, be it
7171 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
7272 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
7373 family of Billy Joe "Red" McCombs; and, be it further
7474 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
7575 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
7676 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
7777 memory of "Red" McCombs.
