6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Billy Joe "Red" McCombs, a celebrated |

8 | 8 | | 2023, at the age of 95; and |

9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Billy Joe McCombs, dubbed "Red" for his red hair, |
---|
10 | 10 | | was born on October 19, 1927, in the small West Texas town of |
---|
11 | 11 | | Spur; descended from families of farmers, Red was taught the |
---|
12 | 12 | | value of hard work when he started his first business at the age |
---|
13 | 13 | | of nine; his unstoppable ambition, keen business sense, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | larger-than-life personality made him a legendary figure in |
---|
15 | 15 | | American industry and sports management, and his philanthropy |
---|
16 | 16 | | made the McCombs name synonymous with generosity as well as |
---|
17 | 17 | | excellence; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, A successful football player during high school |
---|
19 | 19 | | in Corpus Christi, Red earned a scholarship to attend |
---|
20 | 20 | | Southwestern University in Georgetown; he paused his college |
---|
21 | 21 | | education to serve his country with distinction in the United |
---|
22 | 22 | | States Army for two years before returning to enroll at The |

23 | 23 | | University of Texas under the GI Bill; and |

24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Realizing his true calling as a businessman, Red |

25 | 25 | | left school and returned to Corpus Christi, where he sold cars at |
---|
26 | 26 | | the Ford dealership and excelled as a salesman through his |
---|
27 | 27 | | determination and charisma; he opened his first car dealership at |
---|
28 | 28 | | the age of 29 in 1957, and the Red McCombs Automotive Group |
---|
29 | 29 | | quickly expanded into an automotive empire; the enterprise |
---|
30 | 30 | | became the largest car dealership network in Texas and the |
---|
31 | 31 | | sixth-largest network in the nation; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A talented entrepreneur and a shrewd media |

33 | 33 | | visionary, Red purchased San Antonio radio stations in 1972 with |
---|
34 | 34 | | his business partner, Lowry Mays, and together they founded Clear |
---|
35 | 35 | | Channel Communications; Red's intuition for franchise expansion |
---|
36 | 36 | | and his experience in business and advertising helped the company |
---|
37 | 37 | | to grow into the world's largest radio station conglomerate and |

38 | 38 | | to become a dominating power in the industries of outdoor |

39 | 39 | | advertising, live music, and sports management; and |

40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, In 1973, Red purchased the Dallas Chaparrals |

41 | 41 | | basketball team and relocated the team to San Antonio under a new |

42 | 42 | | name, the Spurs; widely recognized as a trailblazer in sports |

43 | 43 | | management, Red turned the Spurs and the Denver Nuggets into |

44 | 44 | | national powerhouses and played a key role in shaping the modern |

45 | 45 | | incarnation of the National Basketball Association; he spent a |
---|
46 | 46 | | number of years as the owner of the National Football League's |
---|
47 | 47 | | Minnesota Vikings, and by investing in Circuit of the Americas, |
---|
48 | 48 | | he was instrumental in the establishment of Formula One racing in |
---|
49 | 49 | | Texas; and |

50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, Generous community benefactors, Red and his wife, |
---|
51 | 51 | | Charline, donated $50 million to The University of Texas business |
---|
52 | 52 | | school, which was renamed the McCombs School of Business, and $30 |
---|
53 | 53 | | million to the university's MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston; |
---|
54 | 54 | | Red was a champion for education, and his philanthropy created |
---|
55 | 55 | | countless opportunities for students and young entrepreneurs in |
---|
56 | 56 | | Texas; and |

57 | 57 | | WHEREAS, Red was blessed with the love and support of his |

58 | 58 | | late wife, Charline, for almost seven decades; together, they |

59 | 59 | | were figureheads in the San Antonio community and were greatly |

60 | 60 | | involved in both state and national politics; Red and Charline |
---|
61 | 61 | | were blessed with three daughters, Lynda McCombs, Marsha |
---|
62 | 62 | | Shields, and Connie McNab, and he cherished his eight |
---|
63 | 63 | | grandchildren and his 11 great-grandchildren; and |

64 | 64 | | WHEREAS, An esteemed civic leader and a titan of industry |

65 | 65 | | who created more that 400 businesses, Red McCombs changed the |
---|
66 | 66 | | American automotive trade, professional athletics, advertising, |
---|
67 | 67 | | and radio broadcasting; he embodied the spirit of the Lone Star |
---|
68 | 68 | | State through his love of thinking big and his zest for |
---|
69 | 69 | | deal-making and adventure, and he leaves behind an inspiring |
---|
70 | 70 | | legacy for all Texans; now, therefore, be it |

71 | 71 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
