26 WHEREAS, The strength of our communities depends on the
37 dedicated efforts of public officials, and over the years, Rod
4- Ponton of Presidio has served the citizens of West Texas in a
5- number of important roles; and
6- WHEREAS, A prominent lawyer with four decades of
7- experience, Mr. Ponton has served as Presidio County attorney
8- since 2017, and he is city attorney for the Cities of Alpine and
9- Balmorhea; previously, Mr. Ponton was the 83rd District
10- attorney, serving Brewster, Jeff Davis, Pecos, and Presidio
11- Counties; he was also employed as city attorney for the Cities of
12- Pecos and Presidio, and he served as chair of the West Pecos
13- Management District; and
8+ Ponton of Presidio has served the citizens of West Texas in a number

10+ WHEREAS, A prominent lawyer with four decades of experience,
11+ Mr. Ponton has served as Presidio County attorney since 2017, and
12+ he is city attorney for the Cities of Alpine and Balmorhea;
13+ previously, Mr. Ponton was the 83rd District attorney, serving
14+ Brewster, Jeff Davis, Pecos, and Presidio Counties; he was also
15+ employed as city attorney for the Cities of Pecos and Presidio, and
16+ he served as chair of the West Pecos Management District; and
1417 WHEREAS, Mr. Ponton is the founder of a private civil
15- practice, Big Bend Law; the firm handles a wide range of matters
16- for its clients, including real estate transactions, civil
17- litigation, family law, probate law, and estate planning; and
18- WHEREAS, Early in his career, Mr. Ponton worked in
19- criminal defense law in El Paso; he successfully represented
20- Henry Lee Lucas in one of the state's most high-profile capital
21- murder cases, and in 1987, he was named the Criminal Defense
22- Lawyer of the Year by the State Bar of Texas; and
18+ practice, Big Bend Law; the firm handles a wide range of matters for

21+ WHEREAS, Early in his career, Mr. Ponton worked in criminal
22+ defense law in El Paso; he successfully represented Henry Lee Lucas

24+ 1987, he was named the Criminal Defense Lawyer of the Year by the
25+ State Bar of Texas; and
2326 WHEREAS, Mr. Ponton grew up in Alpine; after receiving his
24- bachelor's degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1973,
25- he went on to graduate from the Texas Tech University School of
26- Law in 1982; and
27- WHEREAS, Now forever renowned as "the Cat Lawyer," Mr.
28- Ponton appeared in a Zoom call video that went viral in February
29- 2021, when he proclaimed for what would become a global audience,
30- "I'm here live, I'm not a cat," as a wayward filter imposed the
31- image of a kitten over his face; this led to an interview on
32- television's TODAY show and other major media coverage; and

38- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
39- Legislature, hereby honor Rod Ponton for his contributions to
40- West Texas and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future;
41- and, be it further
37+ deep commitment to the legal profession and to public service, and
38+ his accomplishments have earned the admiration and appreciation of
39+ his fellow West Texas residents; now, therefore, be it
40+ RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
41+ hereby honor Rod Ponton for his contributions to West Texas and
42+ extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
43- prepared for Mr. Ponton as an expression of high regard from the
44- Texas Senate.
