2	2	WHEREAS, The Austin Branch of the American Association of
3	3	University Women is celebrating its 100th anniversary in
4	4	November 2023; and
5	5	WHEREAS, AAUW was founded in 1881, when a small group of
6	6	female college graduates banded together with the goal of
7	7	promoting women's career advancement and encouraging more women
8	8	to pursue higher education; the organization's mission is to
9	9	advance gender equity through research, education, and advocacy,
10	10	and it has supported the academic achievements of many thousands
11	11	of women scholars throughout its history; and
12	12	WHEREAS, In 1923, the Austin Branch of AAUW was organized
13	13	at the Driskill Hotel by 15 women, including prominent leaders in
14	14	the civic, religious, and cultural life of the city; over the
15	15	course of a century, the Austin Branch has distinguished itself
16	16	as a force for good in the community by forming partnerships with
17	17	organizations such as the Austin Public Library Association, the
18	18	Community Council of Austin, the League of Women Voters, Planned
19	19	Parenthood, and the Texas Freedom Network and participating in
20	20	such endeavors as the March of Dimes campaign, the College
21	21	Faculty Program, and the environmental coalition We Care Austin;
22	22	and
23	23	WHEREAS, Early in its history, the Austin Branch was
24	24	involved in the founding of the city's first public library, and
25	25	it was integral to the establishment of a Well Baby Clinic and the
26	26	Chalmers Nursery School; moreover, the branch's members have
27	27	taken part in charitable initiatives to provide food and clothing
28	28	to residents in need and to improve conditions at Brackenridge
29	29	Hospital; and
30	30	WHEREAS, The Austin Branch created an endowment fund that
31	31	has been used to award fellowships to doctoral students at The
32	32	University of Texas, as well as an endowed scholarship for female
33	33	students enrolled at Austin Community College; the branch has
34	34	also sponsored Expanding Your Horizons in Science and
35	35	Mathematics, a conference for middle school girls, and a host of
36	36	other symposia, workshops, and events with the purpose of
37	37	fostering dialogue on important issues such as educational and
38	38	pay equity; and
39	39	WHEREAS, AAUW's Austin Branch is aligned with its
40	40	trailblazing parent organization in its efforts to build a more
41	41	equitable society and to empower women in all walks of life, and
42	42	it is a pleasure to join its members in commemorating this
43	43	special milestone in the organization's proud history; now,
44	44	therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
46	46	Legislature, hereby commemorate the centennial of the Austin
47	47	Branch of the American Association of University Women and extend
48	48	to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes
49	49	for continued success; and, be it further
50	50	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
51	51	prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard
52	52	from the Texas Senate.
