11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 638
22 WHEREAS, The Austin Branch of the American Association of
33 University Women is celebrating its 100th anniversary in
44 November 2023; and
55 WHEREAS, AAUW was founded in 1881, when a small group of
66 female college graduates banded together with the goal of
77 promoting women's career advancement and encouraging more women
88 to pursue higher education; the organization's mission is to
99 advance gender equity through research, education, and advocacy,
1010 and it has supported the academic achievements of many thousands
1111 of women scholars throughout its history; and
1212 WHEREAS, In 1923, the Austin Branch of AAUW was organized
1313 at the Driskill Hotel by 15 women, including prominent leaders in
1414 the civic, religious, and cultural life of the city; over the
1515 course of a century, the Austin Branch has distinguished itself
1616 as a force for good in the community by forming partnerships with
1717 organizations such as the Austin Public Library Association, the
1818 Community Council of Austin, the League of Women Voters, Planned
1919 Parenthood, and the Texas Freedom Network and participating in
2020 such endeavors as the March of Dimes campaign, the College
2121 Faculty Program, and the environmental coalition We Care Austin;
2222 and
2323 WHEREAS, Early in its history, the Austin Branch was
2424 involved in the founding of the city's first public library, and
2525 it was integral to the establishment of a Well Baby Clinic and the
2626 Chalmers Nursery School; moreover, the branch's members have
2727 taken part in charitable initiatives to provide food and clothing
2828 to residents in need and to improve conditions at Brackenridge
2929 Hospital; and
3030 WHEREAS, The Austin Branch created an endowment fund that
3131 has been used to award fellowships to doctoral students at The
3232 University of Texas, as well as an endowed scholarship for female
3333 students enrolled at Austin Community College; the branch has
3434 also sponsored Expanding Your Horizons in Science and
3535 Mathematics, a conference for middle school girls, and a host of
3636 other symposia, workshops, and events with the purpose of
3737 fostering dialogue on important issues such as educational and
3838 pay equity; and
3939 WHEREAS, AAUW's Austin Branch is aligned with its
4040 trailblazing parent organization in its efforts to build a more
4141 equitable society and to empower women in all walks of life, and
4242 it is a pleasure to join its members in commemorating this
4343 special milestone in the organization's proud history; now,
4444 therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4646 Legislature, hereby commemorate the centennial of the Austin
4747 Branch of the American Association of University Women and extend
4848 to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes
4949 for continued success; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5151 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard
5252 from the Texas Senate.
