5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
56 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
67 commemorates the life of Mary "Sue" Cunningham Johnston, who died
78 December 14, 2022, at the age of 77; and
89 WHEREAS, Sue Cunningham was born on June 13, 1945, in San
910 Antonio; a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she was a
1011 treasured member of the San Antonio community; and
1112 WHEREAS, While attending The University of Texas at
1213 Austin, Sue met the love of her life, Wayne Johnston; they were
1314 married on November 7, 1968, in Baumholder, Germany, where Wayne
1415 was stationed as a member of the United States Army; after
1516 returning to Texas, they moved to Lubbock, where Sue received her
1617 master's degree in education from Texas Tech University and where
1718 their daughter, Jamie Lynn, and their son, Bryson, were born; and
1819 WHEREAS, A passionate educator, Sue taught at Slaton
1920 Elementary School in Lubbock, and after the family moved to San
2021 Antonio, she taught at Clear Spring Elementary School; she
2122 retired from teaching in 1985 to become a travel agent, and she
2223 and Wayne took their children on numerous adventures around the
2324 United States, Europe, and Central America; and
2425 WHEREAS, Sue and Wayne shared 54 years of marriage, and
2526 they raised their two children by loving example; Sue cherished
2627 her grandsons, Benton and Jack, and enthusiastically supported
2728 them in their sports events and other activities; Sue prided
2829 herself on creating a warm and welcoming home, and she was
2930 renowned for her delightful holiday decor, baking, art projects,
3031 and the atmosphere of care and comfort she created for everyone
3132 who came to visit; and
3233 WHEREAS, A woman of deep faith, kindness, and compassion,
3334 Sue gave generously to others, and her enthusiasm for living each
3435 day to the fullest was a source of inspiration to others; she
3536 leaves behind memories that will be dearly treasured by her many
3637 loved ones and by all who were privileged to know her and to share
3738 in her life; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3940 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4041 family of Mary "Sue" Cunningham Johnston; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4243 her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4344 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4445 memory of Sue Johnston.
