5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
56 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
67 commemorates the life of Wayne Smith Johnston, who died on July
78 14, 2022, at the age of 77; and
89 WHEREAS, Wayne Smith Johnston was born on January 5, 1945,
910 in Port Arthur; Wayne and his two brothers experienced the joys
1011 of a rural upbringing, and country life imbued Wayne's spirit
1112 with a lifelong love of nature, wildlife, and the outdoors; and
1213 WHEREAS, After graduating from Tivy High School in
1314 Kerrville, Wayne met the love of his life and future wife, Sue
1415 Cunningham; he was drafted into the United States Army during the
1516 Vietnam War in 1966 and deployed to Germany, where he and Sue
1617 married in 1968; and
1718 WHEREAS, When Wayne concluded his military service, he and
1819 Sue moved to Lubbock, and the couple earned their degrees from
1920 Texas Tech University; Wayne graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's
2021 of science in agricultural agronomy, and the family settled in
2122 San Antonio; and
2223 WHEREAS, An avid outdoorsman and an expert in the science
2324 of soil management and crop production, Wayne led a career in
2425 agricultural sales and owned a tractor dealership for several
2526 years before focusing on the sale of mechanic specialty products
2627 until his retirement; and
2728 WHEREAS, In addition to his many professional and personal
2829 achievements, Wayne was admired for his kindhearted nature and
2930 for the warmth and generosity that he extended to others; a
3031 longtime member of Northwood Presbyterian Church, where he
3132 served as an elder and deacon for many years, Wayne was led by
3233 principles of faith and unconditional love in his daily life, and
3334 he approached his interactions with his loved ones with
3435 unwavering support, encouragement, and affection; and
3536 WHEREAS, Wayne and Sue's union of 54 years provided a model
3637 of lasting devotion to their children, Jamie and Bryson, whom
3738 they raised by loving example; Wayne's grandsons, Jack and
3839 Benton, brought immeasurable joy to his life, and he delighted in
3940 their successes and accomplishments; and
4041 WHEREAS, Wayne was a compassionate man who gave
4142 unselfishly to others, and his positive outlook, unwavering
4243 strength, and dedication to his family set a shining example for
4344 others to follow; he leaves behind memories that will be forever
4445 cherished by his loved ones and by all who were blessed to share
4546 in his life; now, therefore, be it
4647 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4748 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4849 family of Wayne Smith Johnston; and, be it further
4950 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5051 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5152 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5253 memory of Wayne Johnston.
