6+ WHEREAS, The legacy of a legendary figure in Texas music was
7+ honored as the City of Cockrell Hill celebrated the grand opening of
8+ Stevie Ray Vaughan Park on April 22, 2023; and
59 WHEREAS, Born in Dallas in 1954, Mr. Vaughan grew up in the
6- Oak Cliff-Cockrell Hill area and took up the guitar at a young
7- age; he soon joined his first band and made his public debut at
8- the Hill Theater in Cockrell Hill in 1965; so began a phenomenal
9- musical career that would ultimately make Mr. Vaughan an
10- international star and one of the most revered rock and blues
11- guitarists of all time; and
12- WHEREAS, In 2015, the City of Cockrell Hill acquired the
13- land that had been the site of the Hill Theater, and community
14- leaders began planning a public space to honor the late
15- musician and to provide a location for local artists to
16- showcase their talents; the park is graced by SRV murals and
17- includes a stage, an expansive lawn area, and a walkway set
18- beneath large shade trees; and
19- WHEREAS, This beautiful public gathering area is certain
20- to be a significant resource to the Cockrell Hill community as
21- well as a meaningful monument to a local hero, and it is a
22- pleasure to join in recognizing the vision, leadership, and hard
23- work that have helped make this park a reality; now, therefore,
24- be it
25- RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
26- Legislature, hereby commemorate the grand opening of Stevie Ray
27- Vaughan Park in Cockrell Hill and honor all those who have
28- contributed to this endeavor for their efforts; and, be it
29- further
