|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Lisa Halili, the founder of the San Leon Oyster |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Fest (SLOF), first conceived of the idea for Rett Reef to raise |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | awareness of Rett syndrome, a rare neurodevelopmental disorder |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | that primarily impacts girls and women and is characterized by |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | slowing development, loss of mobility, and other life-changing |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | symptoms; the Rett Reef project is being made possible through a |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | partnership involving SLOF, Pier 6 Seafood & Oyster House, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Prestige Oysters, The Nature Conservancy, and Texas Sea Grant at |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Texas A&M University; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, For the creation of Rett Reef, Pier 6 is donating |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | all the shells necessary to help restore a historical sport |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | fishing reef that was destroyed by Hurricane Ike; upon its |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | completion, the nonharvestable oyster reef will span 10 acres, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and it will play an instrumental role in improving water quality, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | attracting fauna, protecting the area from storm surges, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | educating the public about the many benefits provided by oyster |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | reefs; in addition, the reef will serve as a habitat for fish and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | invertebrate species, and anglers will be able to use the reef as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | a recreational fishing location; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, With its natural beauty and abundant wildlife, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the Galveston Bay area is one of the treasures of the Lone Star |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | State, and Rett Reef is sure to be a valuable addition to this |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | vibrant and unique ecosystem; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby recognize Rett Reef in Galveston Bay and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | extend to all those associated with the reef sincere appreciation |

| 32 | 32 | | for their efforts to bring the project to fruition. |
