55 R E S O L U T I O N
66 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
77 memories of retired Wichita County sheriff Thomas Joseph Callahan,
88 who passed away on August 12, 2021, at the age of 74; and
99 WHEREAS, The son of Thomas and Catherine Callahan,
1010 Thomas Callahan was born on November 3, 1946, in Havertown,
1111 Pennsylvania, and grew up with a sister, Catherine, and four
1212 brothers, Joseph, Brian, Patrick, and Francis; and
1313 WHEREAS, A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Callahan joined
1414 the Wichita County Sheriff's Office as a jailer and rose through the
1515 ranks to deputy and then to lieutenant; he was appointed sheriff in
1616 1986 and was subsequently elected to the position for the next five
1717 terms, becoming the longest-serving sheriff in the county; after
1818 retiring in 2008, he taught criminal justice at Midwestern State
1919 University; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Callahan shared a rewarding marriage with his
2121 wife, Mary Anne, and he took great pride in his four children,
2222 Siobain, Coreen, Thomas, and Aiden; with the passing years, he had
2323 the privilege of seeing his family grow to include eight
2424 grandchildren; and
2525 WHEREAS, Admired for his kind and generous nature, his
2626 delightful sense of humor, and his deep devotion to his family,
2727 Thomas Callahan lived a life that was rich in personal and
2828 professional achievements, and he will forever be a source of
2929 inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
3131 hereby pay tribute to the life of Thomas Joseph Callahan and extend
3232 sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3434 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this
3535 day, it do so in memory of Thomas Callahan.
