5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The ship was named in honor of both the city of |

6 | 6 | | Kingsville and Naval Air Station Kingsville, highlighting the |

7 | 7 | | cooperative efforts of the two communities in behalf of the |
---|
8 | 8 | | nation; its sponsor, Katherine Kline, performed the traditional |
---|
9 | 9 | | breaking of a bottle of sparkling wine on the deck of the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Kingsville at the Austal USA shipyard; she represents the sixth |
---|
11 | 11 | | generation of the King Ranch family, descended from steamboat |
---|
12 | 12 | | Captain Richard King, who founded the ranch in Kingsville in |
---|
13 | 13 | | 1853; nearly nine decades later, the Naval Air Station Kingsville |
---|
14 | 14 | | was established, and it has enjoyed a special relationship with |
---|
15 | 15 | | the ranch ever since; Ms. Kline's father, Dr. Richard Sugden, |
---|
16 | 16 | | was a Navy flight surgeon who held the rank of lieutenant |
---|
17 | 17 | | commander in the U.S. Navy; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Armed with guns, missiles, and helicopters, the |
---|
19 | 19 | | ship is 418 feet long and can reach speeds of over 40 knots; the |
---|
20 | 20 | | 18th Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship belongs to a class |
---|
21 | 21 | | of fast, optimally manned, mission-tailored surface combatants; |
---|
22 | 22 | | they operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments to address |
---|
23 | 23 | | 21st-century coastal threats, and they integrate with joint, |
---|
24 | 24 | | combined, manned, and unmanned teams to support forward presence, |
---|
25 | 25 | | maritime security, sea control, and deterrence missions all over |
---|
26 | 26 | | the world; like the other littoral ships of the trimaran variant, |
---|
27 | 27 | | it will be stationed at Naval Base San Diego after its scheduled |
---|
28 | 28 | | commissioning in the summer of 2024; and |

29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The naming of this combat ship in honor of the |

30 | 30 | | city of Kingsville and Naval Air Station Kingsville is a |
