55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew
66 to a close with the passing of John Frank Abbott of Mineola on
77 April 21, 2023, at the age of 70; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of John Abbott Jr. and Anne Abbott, John
99 Abbott was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 8, 1952, and he
1010 grew up with the companionship of two sisters, Colleen and Kim;
1111 following his graduation from John H. Reagan High School in
1212 Austin, he attended Southwest Texas State University, and he
1313 completed his education at East Texas State University, where he
1414 earned a master's degree in counseling and a doctorate in
1515 curriculum and instruction; and
1616 WHEREAS, In 1974, Dr. Abbott began his long and rewarding
1717 career in education as a Spanish and English teacher at Mineola
1818 High School; he subsequently worked as a counselor in the
1919 Alba-Golden Independent School District, and in 1987, he
2020 returned to Mineola ISD as curriculum director; he went on to
2121 serve as the district's superintendent for several years before
2222 accepting a position as director of teacher certification with
2323 the Region 7 Educational Service Center; along the way, he also
2424 served as a professor of education at Texas College in Tyler; he
2525 was a teacher at Grand Saline High School at the time of his
2626 passing; and
2727 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Dr. Abbott was a
2828 longtime member of the Kiwanis Club, the Wood County Child
2929 Welfare Board, and the Mineola Caring and Sharing board, and in
3030 2014, he was named Humanitarian of the Year; a man of deep faith,
3131 he was a valued congregant of First United Methodist Church of
3232 Mineola; and
3333 WHEREAS, Above all else, Dr. Abbott was devoted to his
3434 wife, Janell, with whom he shared a fulfilling marriage of nearly
3535 four and a half decades; he loved cooking and traveling in his
3636 leisure hours, having visited numerous countries over the years,
3737 and he was known for his generosity, kindness, and joie de vivre;
3838 and
3939 WHEREAS, John Abbott was a man of great compassion who
4040 remained engaged in the world throughout his life and who found
4141 joy and inspiration in helping others, and he will always hold a
4242 treasured place in the hearts of his loved ones and the many
4343 students whose lives he forever enriched; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4545 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Frank
4646 Abbott and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his
4747 passing; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4949 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5050 this day, it do so in memory of John Abbott.
