5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew |

6 | 6 | | to a close with the passing of John Frank Abbott of Mineola on |

7 | 7 | | April 21, 2023, at the age of 70; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of John Abbott Jr. and Anne Abbott, John |
---|
9 | 9 | | Abbott was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 8, 1952, and he |
---|
10 | 10 | | grew up with the companionship of two sisters, Colleen and Kim; |
---|
11 | 11 | | following his graduation from John H. Reagan High School in |
---|
12 | 12 | | Austin, he attended Southwest Texas State University, and he |
---|
13 | 13 | | completed his education at East Texas State University, where he |
---|
14 | 14 | | earned a master's degree in counseling and a doctorate in |
---|
15 | 15 | | curriculum and instruction; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1974, Dr. Abbott began his long and rewarding |
---|
17 | 17 | | career in education as a Spanish and English teacher at Mineola |
---|
18 | 18 | | High School; he subsequently worked as a counselor in the |
---|
19 | 19 | | Alba-Golden Independent School District, and in 1987, he |
---|
20 | 20 | | returned to Mineola ISD as curriculum director; he went on to |
---|
21 | 21 | | serve as the district's superintendent for several years before |
---|
22 | 22 | | accepting a position as director of teacher certification with |
---|
23 | 23 | | the Region 7 Educational Service Center; along the way, he also |
---|
24 | 24 | | served as a professor of education at Texas College in Tyler; he |
---|
25 | 25 | | was a teacher at Grand Saline High School at the time of his |
---|
26 | 26 | | passing; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Active in his community, Dr. Abbott was a |
---|
28 | 28 | | longtime member of the Kiwanis Club, the Wood County Child |
---|
29 | 29 | | Welfare Board, and the Mineola Caring and Sharing board, and in |
---|
30 | 30 | | 2014, he was named Humanitarian of the Year; a man of deep faith, |
---|
31 | 31 | | he was a valued congregant of First United Methodist Church of |
---|
32 | 32 | | Mineola; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Above all else, Dr. Abbott was devoted to his |
---|
34 | 34 | | wife, Janell, with whom he shared a fulfilling marriage of nearly |
---|
35 | 35 | | four and a half decades; he loved cooking and traveling in his |
---|
36 | 36 | | leisure hours, having visited numerous countries over the years, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and he was known for his generosity, kindness, and joie de vivre; |
---|
38 | 38 | | and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, John Abbott was a man of great compassion who |
---|
40 | 40 | | remained engaged in the world throughout his life and who found |
---|
41 | 41 | | joy and inspiration in helping others, and he will always hold a |
---|
42 | 42 | | treasured place in the hearts of his loved ones and the many |
---|
43 | 43 | | students whose lives he forever enriched; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Frank |
---|
46 | 46 | | Abbott and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his |
---|
47 | 47 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
49 | 49 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
---|
50 | 50 | | this day, it do so in memory of John Abbott. |
