6	6	WHEREAS, Residents of Wichita Falls are gathering on
7	7	October 12, 2022, to pay tribute to hometown hero and motorsports
8	8	superstar Eddie Hill; and
9	9	WHEREAS, A champion racer on land and water, Eddie Hill has
10	10	been named the 2021 Legend of North Texas by the Museum of North
11	11	Texas History; in conjunction with that honor, Eddie Hill Day is
12	12	being celebrated to recognize his racing legacy and his
13	13	contributions to the Wichita Falls community; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Born in Longview on March 6, 1936, Mr. Hill received
15	15	his first racing trophy at age 11; he began building dragster cars a
16	16	few years later and continued to compete while attending Texas A&M
17	17	University; after earning his bachelor's degree, he won the
18	18	American Hot Rod Association championship in 1959 and set several
19	19	records over the course of the following years, including one for
20	20	breaking the 200-mile-per-hour barrier in a gas-powered car; he is
21	21	credited with numerous racing innovations during this period,
22	22	including introducing front wings to dragsters and inventing the
23	23	tire-smoking burnout, which became standard practice for top fuel
24	24	cars; and
25	25	WHEREAS, In 1966, Mr. Hill opened Eddie Hill's Fun Cycles,
26	26	beginning a successful Wichita Falls business that has continued
27	27	for more than five and a half decades; to promote the dealership, he
28	28	started racing motorcycles, earning over 100 trophies in the next
29	29	eight years; he shifted his focus to boat racing in 1974 and went on
30	30	to hold the Guinness World Record for fastest speed in a
31	31	propeller-driven boat in addition to winning regional, national,
32	32	and world championships, including two titles in the World Series
33	33	of Dragboat Racing; and
34	34	WHEREAS, A severe crash concluded his boat racing career, but
35	35	this determined competitor opted to return to asphalt drag racing
36	36	in 1985 following a two-decade absence from the sport; three years
37	37	later, he became the first person to break the five-second barrier,
38	38	and in 1993, at age 57, he became the oldest person to win the
39	39	National Hot Rod Association top fuel world championship; he
40	40	retired from drag racing for good in 1999 and was inducted into the
41	41	International Drag Racing Hall of Fame the next year; he is also a
42	42	member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the Texas
43	43	Motorsports Hall of Fame; and
44	44	WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Hill has drawn strength
45	45	from his religious faith; he also benefits from the love and support
46	46	of his wife of 37 years, Ercie, and his two children, Sabrina and
47	47	Dustin; and
48	48	WHEREAS, A world-renowned figure who has excelled in multiple
49	49	types of motorsports racing, Eddie Hill is a source of great pride
50	50	to the residents of Wichita Falls and the Lone Star State, and he is
51	51	indeed deserving of this prestigious honor; now, therefore, be it
52	52	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
53	53	hereby commemorate Eddie Hill Day in Wichita Falls and commend
54	54	Mr. Hill for his many achievements; and, be it further
55	55	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
56	56	prepared for Mr. Hill as an expression of high regard by the Texas
57	57	Senate.
