11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 719
22 WHEREAS, Fentanyl Victims Remembrance Day is taking place
33 on September 23, 2023; and
44 WHEREAS, A highly addictive synthetic opioid, fentanyl has
55 fueled an alarming increase in overdose deaths, and it has
66 impacted communities across the nation, from large metropolitan
77 areas to rural counties; among Americans under the age of 50, the
88 drug is involved in a greater number of deaths than any other
99 cause, proving more lethal than cancer, heart disease, homicide,
1010 or suicide; as little as two milligrams of fentanyl is a
1111 potentially deadly dose, especially for individuals who do not
1212 have a tolerance to opioids; and
1313 WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and
1414 Prevention, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl were involved in
1515 67 percent of the more than 107,000 drug overdose and drug
1616 poisoning deaths in the 12-month period ending in January 2022;
1717 in some cases, the deaths were attributed to fentanyl mixed with
1818 other substances, and many users were unaware that they were
1919 taking fentanyl; and
2020 WHEREAS, Each year, September 23 is set aside to honor and
2121 remember all victims who tragically lost their lives to fentanyl
2222 poisoning, to encourage support for their loved ones, and to warn
2323 the public about the dangers posed by the drug; the observance is
2424 led by fentanyl awareness organizations, community response
2525 teams, and affected families; and
2626 WHEREAS, More work remains to be done to assist the
2727 individuals and communities impacted by fentanyl use, and
2828 Fentanyl Victims Remembrance Day provides a fitting opportunity
2929 to affirm our commitment to combatting this deadly drug threat;
3030 now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3232 Legislature, hereby recognize September 23, 2023, as Fentanyl
3333 Victims Remembrance Day and pay tribute to the memory of all
3434 those who have died from fentanyl poisoning.
