2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Marta E. Artiga served |

3 | 3 | | her country with great distinction as a member of the U.S. Army, and |

4 | 4 | | the observance of Women Veterans Day 2023 provides a fitting |

5 | 5 | | opportunity to pay tribute to her outstanding military career; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A native of El Salvador, Marta Artiga joined the |
---|
7 | 7 | | U.S. Army in 1989 and graduated from basic training at Fort Dix, |
---|
8 | 8 | | New Jersey; she completed her initial enlistment in 1992, the |
---|
9 | 9 | | same year that she became a U.S. citizen, and she went on to join |
---|
10 | 10 | | the Reserve and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army |
---|
11 | 11 | | Nurse Corps in 1999; she embarked on her military nursing career |
---|
12 | 12 | | at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | through the years, she held such titles as clinical nurse, chief |
---|
14 | 14 | | of ambulatory nursing, and chief of the education support branch; |
---|
15 | 15 | | she retired from active duty in 2021, having served in the |
---|
16 | 16 | | Persian Gulf War, as an officer in Iraq, and in a variety of other |
---|
17 | 17 | | posts around the globe; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Artiga holds a medical |
---|
19 | 19 | | sciences degree from the Federal University of Alagoas in Brazil, |
---|
20 | 20 | | a nursing degree from California State University, Los Angeles, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and a medical-surgery nursing certification from the American |
---|
22 | 22 | | Nurses Credentialing Center; her military education includes her |
---|
23 | 23 | | graduation from Command and General Staff College; she was |
---|
24 | 24 | | recognized with numerous commendations, including four Army |
---|
25 | 25 | | Achievement Medals, seven Army Commendation Medals, the Global |
---|
26 | 26 | | War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Humanitarian |
---|
27 | 27 | | Service Medal; today, she continues to benefit others as a Red |
---|
28 | 28 | | Cross volunteer for Soldier and Family Readiness Groups; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, During her years in uniform, Marta Artiga upheld |
---|
30 | 30 | | the highest ideals of our nation's armed forces, demonstrating |
---|
31 | 31 | | exemplary bravery, dedication, and integrity, and her fellow |
---|
32 | 32 | | citizens owe her a lasting debt of gratitude; now, therefore, be it |

33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |

34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby commend U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) |

35 | 35 | | Marta E. Artiga for her military service on the occasion of Women |

36 | 36 | | Veterans Day 2023 and extend to her sincere best wishes for the |
