6	6	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Navarro County are coming together
7	7	in Austin on April 18, 2023, to celebrate Navarro County Day at the
8	8	State Capitol; and
9	9	WHEREAS, This region of rolling blackland prairie was once
10	10	inhabited by the Ione, Kickapoo, and Comanche, and early
11	11	Anglo-American settlers built a fort on the Navasota River in 1833;
12	12	Navarro County was officially organized in 1846 and named for Jose
13	13	Antonio Navarro, a hero of the Texas Revolution; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Corsicana was founded in 1848 as the county seat and
15	15	named after the island of Corsica, the birthplace of Mr. Navarro's
16	16	parents; the arrival of the railroad after the Civil War helped
17	17	Corsicana to become the region's leading center for the trading and
18	18	shipping of cotton, grain, wool, and hides; and
19	19	WHEREAS, In 1894, drillers seeking more water for Corsicana's
20	20	growing population struck oil and gas instead, leading to the first
21	21	oil boom and the longest continual flow of oil in Texas; since that
22	22	initial strike, more than 200 million barrels of oil have been
23	23	produced in the county; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Today, Navarro County's multifaceted economy
25	25	revolves around advanced manufacturing, information technology,
26	26	the oil and gas industries, and agriculture, primarily the
27	27	production of cattle, cotton, sorghum, corn, and wheat; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Corsicana is known far and wide for its DeLuxe
29	29	Fruitcake, a creation of the 127-year-old Collin Street Bakery; the
30	30	town is also home to: the Navarro Pecan Company, one of the largest
31	31	pecan-shelling facilities in the world; a Russell Stover candy
32	32	factory; Oil City Iron Works, a foundry established in 1866 that
33	33	produces industrial parts and equipment, with over 7,000 active
34	34	patterns; and Corsicana Bedding, Incorporated, which was founded in
35	35	1971 as Tipton Manufacturing and is still leading the industry,
36	36	having become one of the most solid bedding manufacturers in the
37	37	nation; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Notable attractions in Corsicana include the Lefty
39	39	Frizzell Memorial and Museum, the restored Palace Theatre, and
40	40	Pioneer Village, a re-creation of a 19th-century Texas town; in
41	41	addition, Navarro College boasts the Cook Center Planetarium, one
42	42	of the largest domed theaters in Texas, and the Pearce Museum, which
43	43	contains extensive collections of Civil War documents and Western
44	44	art; and
45	45	WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy abundant
46	46	opportunities for boating, fishing, waterskiing, and other such
47	47	pastimes, thanks to the proximity of Richland-Chambers Reservoir,
48	48	Navarro Mills Lake, and Lake Halbert; and
49	49	WHEREAS, Honoring their rich heritage even as they embrace
50	50	the challenges and opportunities of the future, the citizens of
51	51	Corsicana and Navarro County may indeed take pride in the vital role
52	52	their community has played in the story of the Lone Star State; now,
53	53	therefore, be it
54	54	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
55	55	hereby recognize April 18, 2023, as Navarro County Day at the State
56	56	Capitol and extend sincere best wishes to the visiting delegation
57	57	for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin; and, be it further
58	58	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
59	59	prepared in honor of this special day.
