66 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Kaufman County are gathering in
77 Austin on February 6, 2023, to celebrate Kaufman County Day at the
88 State Capitol; and
99 WHEREAS, Situated in the fertile blackland prairie of
1010 Northeast Texas, Kaufman County was home to Cherokee and Caddo
1111 Indians when settlers arrived in 1840 and established a community
1212 that became known as Kingsboro; and
1313 WHEREAS, In 1848, Kaufman County was carved out of Henderson
1414 County and named in honor of David Spangler Kaufman, a member of the
1515 Texas Legislature and the United States Congress; three years
1616 later, the settlement of Kingsboro became the county seat and took
1717 the new name of Kaufman; and
1818 WHEREAS, Among the area's notable historic sites is the
1919 Kaufman County Poor Farm, which was established in 1883 to provide
2020 housing to indigent residents; other landmarks include the Porter
2121 Farm near Terrell, the Spellman Museum of Forney History, the
2222 Kaufman County Veterans Memorial Park and Vietnam Memorial Wall,
2323 the Terrell Heritage Museum, and the No. 1 British Flying Training
2424 School Museum in Terrell; and
2525 WHEREAS, Treasuring their rich heritage as they look forward
2626 to a bright and promising future, the citizens of Kaufman County may
2727 take great pride in the role their communities continue to play in
2828 the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
3030 hereby recognize February 6, 2023, as Kaufman County Day at the
3131 State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
3232 wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
