66 WHEREAS, Residents of Rowlett are gathering in Austin on
77 January 31, 2023, to celebrate Rowlett Day at the State Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, The area around present-day Rowlett was first
99 settled in the 1840s by members of the Peters and Mercer Colonies; a
1010 post office was set up in 1880, and the town was eventually named
1111 Rowlett after Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the east fork of the
1212 Trinity River; and
1313 WHEREAS, With the arrival of the Dallas and Greenville
1414 Railway in 1889, the town soon became a prosperous cotton farming
1515 community with a school, churches, and businesses, and it also
1616 benefited from being a stop on one of the nation's first
1717 transcontinental highways, the Bankhead Highway; the city was
1818 incorporated in 1952 by a vote of 84 citizens; and
1919 WHEREAS, Today, Rowlett has grown into a thriving city of
2020 more than 60,000 residents who enjoy 30 miles of beautiful Lake Ray
2121 Hubbard shoreline; it has been named a Tree City USA, and it has
2222 been ranked as one of the safest cities in the state; Rowlett has
2323 also won recognition from the Texas Economic Development Council
2424 and the Dallas Business Journal for its economic development
2525 achievements; the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce was established in
2626 1924, and it has continued to play a vital role in local development
2727 as this small, agricultural town has grown into a modern city with a
2828 vibrant downtown business district; and
2929 WHEREAS, Honoring their heritage as they embrace the
3030 opportunities of the future, the citizens of Rowlett may take
3131 justifiable pride in the fine Texas city they call home; now,
3232 therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
3434 hereby recognize January 31, 2023, as Rowlett Day at the State
3535 Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation.
