| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Rowlett are gathering in Austin on |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | January 31, 2023, to celebrate Rowlett Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The area around present-day Rowlett was first |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | settled in the 1840s by members of the Peters and Mercer Colonies; a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | post office was set up in 1880, and the town was eventually named |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Rowlett after Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the east fork of the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Trinity River; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, With the arrival of the Dallas and Greenville |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Railway in 1889, the town soon became a prosperous cotton farming |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | community with a school, churches, and businesses, and it also |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | benefited from being a stop on one of the nation's first |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | transcontinental highways, the Bankhead Highway; the city was |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | incorporated in 1952 by a vote of 84 citizens; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, Rowlett has grown into a thriving city of |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | more than 60,000 residents who enjoy 30 miles of beautiful Lake Ray |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Hubbard shoreline; it has been named a Tree City USA, and it has |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | been ranked as one of the safest cities in the state; Rowlett has |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | also won recognition from the Texas Economic Development Council |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and the Dallas Business Journal for its economic development |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | achievements; the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce was established in |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | 1924, and it has continued to play a vital role in local development |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | as this small, agricultural town has grown into a modern city with a |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | vibrant downtown business district; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Honoring their heritage as they embrace the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | opportunities of the future, the citizens of Rowlett may take |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | justifiable pride in the fine Texas city they call home; now, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |

| 34 | 34 | | hereby recognize January 31, 2023, as Rowlett Day at the State |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation. |
