66 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Andrews County are gathering in
77 Austin on January 25, 2023, to celebrate Andrews County Day at the
88 State Capitol; and
99 WHEREAS, Situated on the high plains of the Permian Basin,
1010 Andrews County was established in 1876 and formally organized in
1111 1910 with Andrews as its county seat; both the city and county are
1212 named for Richard Andrews, an early settler and soldier in the
1313 revolutionary army and the first man to die in the Texas War for
1414 Independence in 1835; and
1515 WHEREAS, Andrews County has long been a leader in the
1616 ranching industry in Texas, and with widespread use of windmills,
1717 it became an important source of cotton and sorghum; it experienced
1818 an impressive oil boom during the 1940s and recently underwent the
1919 greatest period of growth and development in its history; it
2020 remains one of the state's leading producers of oil and gas; and
2121 WHEREAS, With unprecedented support from citizens, public
2222 officials, and civic organizations in the area, Andrews County
2323 hosts the most advanced secure facility for the disposal of Class A,
2424 B, and C low-level radioactive waste in the United States; and
2525 WHEREAS, The Andrews Independent School District is highly
2626 regarded, and its students have earned top honors at numerous
2727 University Interscholastic League academic competitions; and
2828 WHEREAS, The people of Andrews County enjoy an abundance of
2929 recreational opportunities, including the Andrews County Golf
3030 Course and many exemplary area parks; the county also boasts the
3131 annual Wild, Wild West Fest, which celebrates the region's Western
3232 heritage; and
3333 WHEREAS, Honoring their history as they embrace the
3434 opportunities of the future, the citizens of Andrews County may
3535 take great pride in the role their community has played in the story
3636 of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
3838 hereby recognize January 25, 2023, as Andrews County Day at the
3939 State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
4040 wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin.
