| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Mineola are celebrating the 150th |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | anniversary of their community's founding in 2023; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mineola was established in 1873 when the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | International-Great Northern Railroad and the Texas and Pacific |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Railway built lines through the northeastern region of the state; |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the town became a vital part of the area's commerce, and trains |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | often stopped for crew and passengers to drink from the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | "health-giving" waters of the community's artesian well; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, By 1890, the population of Mineola had grown to |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | 2,000 people, and the town boasted seven churches and several |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | schools, hotels, and banks; the local economy was supported by the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | timber industry, as well as cattle raising and the production of a |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | variety of agricultural crops; a chair factory was opened in 1886, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and the facility later operated as a crate and basket factory until |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 1952; in the 1940s, the discovery of oil in Wood County and the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | construction of a railroad shop further bolstered the town's |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | economy; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Today, Mineola is a designated "National Main Street |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | City," and its picturesque downtown is a popular destination for |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | tourists; in addition to a variety of local shops and restaurants, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | residents and visitors alike enjoy such attractions as the annual |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Iron Horse Heritage Festival, the Mineola Nature Preserve, and the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Lake Country Playhouse and the Historic Select Theater; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to build |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | an even brighter future, the people of Mineola are justifiably |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | proud of their community, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor their |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | contributions to the story of the Lone Star State on this milestone |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | occasion; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature |

| 35 | 35 | | hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of the city of Mineola and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | extend to its citizens sincere best wishes for the future; and, be |
