55 WHEREAS, San Antonio lost an admired activist, artist, and
66 cultural historian with the passing of Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez on
77 May 8, 2023, at the age of 83; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Olivia Sanchez and Ramon Vasquez, Ramon
99 Vasquez y Sanchez was born on the city's Westside on May 6, 1940;
1010 he attended San Antonio College and joined the staff of the Bexar
1111 County Archives to focus on the preservation of Mexican American
1212 history; in addition, he was a member of the Bexar County
1313 Historical Commission; he also gained increasing recognition as
1414 an artist, illustrating the Bexar County coat of arms and
1515 publishing work in newspapers and other media; his acclaimed
1616 paintings of the early Indian Missions centered on the ordinary
1717 people and Mexican heroes generally left out of historical
1818 narratives, and his subjects included daily life in the barrio;
1919 and
2020 WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez y Sanchez became a leader in the
2121 Chicano rights movement; he wrote the preamble for the
2222 establishment of the Raza Unida Party, provided graphic designs,
2323 and served as vice chair and gubernatorial campaign manager; as
2424 chair of the Bilingual Bicultural Coalition on Mass Media, he
2525 oversaw suits against the Federal Communications Commission that
2626 led to greater Mexican American representation among
2727 journalists; he was a fierce advocate for equity in city arts
2828 funding, and he was instrumental in establishing Centro Cultural
2929 Aztlan and ran its visual arts program for decades; in that role,
3030 he encouraged other artists, created a sense of community, and
3131 popularized public Día de los Muertos commemorations; he also
3232 fought for the inclusion of Mexican American and Tejano stories
3333 in the Alamo narrative and organized the first "Olvidate del
3434 Alamo" and "Las Mujeres del Alamo" art exhibits; tenacious and
3535 outspoken, he nevertheless expressed his strong viewpoints with
3636 grace, courtesy, and logic; and
3737 WHEREAS, In 1988, Mr. Vasquez y Sanchez helped reorganize
3838 the Mission Descendant Families of Northeastern Mexico and South
3939 Texas under the umbrella of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation; he
4040 served as a tribal council member for over three decades;
4141 moreover, he formed the nonprofit group American Indians in Texas
4242 at the Spanish Colonial Missions and united with other activists
4343 to secure the return of over 150 ancestral remains to Mission San
4444 Juan Capistrano; and
4545 WHEREAS, Mr. Vasquez y Sanchez married Gloria Camarillo in
4646 1962, and they became the parents of three children, Ramon Juan
4747 Vasquez, Edna Marie Vasquez, and Marisol Vasquez; he and his
4848 second wife, Maria Magdalena Gonzales, had one son, Javier Ramon
4949 Vasquez; following her passing, he was fortunate enough to find
5050 love again, and in 2013, he wed Maria Chavez, who survives him,
5151 along with his children and his 11 grandchildren and 5
5252 great-grandchildren; and
5353 WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez
5454 sought to root out injustice and illuminate the richness of
5555 Mexican American heritage, and although he will be deeply missed
5656 by all who were privileged to know him, they will treasure their
5757 memories of his wisdom, compassion, and wry sense of humor; now,
5858 therefore, be it
5959 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
6060 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life
6161 of Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez and extend sincere condolences to his
6262 family, to his many friends, and to all who mourn his passing;
6363 and, be it further
6464 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
6565 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
6666 this day, it do so in memory of Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez.
