2	6		WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3		-	recognize the members of the McAfee family on the occasion of their
4		-	2023 family reunion, held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; and
	7	+	recognize the members of the McAfee family on the occasion of
	8	+	their 2023 family reunion, held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area;
	9	+	and
5	10		WHEREAS, The genealogical history of the Texas McAfees can
6	11		be traced to enslaved people owned by Dr. John Miller McAfee of
7	12		Woodstock, Georgia; two of those people, Nicy and her son, Miles,
8	13		were first mentioned in Miller's will of 1854 and later, together
9	14		with Miles's wife, Millie, they were included in the 1870 Georgia
10	15		census; Miles and Millie had eight children, including Alonzo
11	16		McAfee; sometime before 1883, Alonzo moved from Georgia to
12	17		Franklin, Texas, where he married Susie Hawkins; and
13	18		WHEREAS, Alonzo and Susie acquired a farming homestead in
14	19		Franklin that comprised more than 250 acres of land, where they
15	20		raised and educated their children; Alonzo managed the family
16	21		farm, while Susie focused on caring for and instructing their
17	22		children and providing an education to many of the local Black
18	23		children; Alonzo and Susie were active in their church with
19	24		Alonzo serving as a deacon and superintendent and Susie working
20	25		as a district missionary, and the McAfee name became well known
21	26		and highly respected in the Franklin community and throughout the
22	27		area; and
23	28		WHEREAS, Although no McAfees reside in Franklin today,
24	29		over the past 140 years, descendants of Alonzo and Susie have
25	30		spread across Texas and elsewhere; approximately 100 descendants
26	31		reside in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and more than 200 live in
27	32		the Houston area; like their ancestors, today's McAfees possess a
28	33		deep-seated work ethic, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge,
29	34		and a steadfast spirit of service; 168 acres of the original
30	35		McAfee homestead remain in the McAfee family, and numerous
31	36		McAfees, including Alonzo and Susie, are interred in the
32	37		North-South Cemetery in Franklin; and
33	38		WHEREAS, The 2023 McAfee family reunion is a fitting
34	39		occasion for the McAfee descendants to gather in celebration of
35	40		their family's proud heritage and to join together in their
36	41		shared commitment to family history, unity, and loyalty; now,
37	42		therefore, be it
38	43		RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
39	44		Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend the members and
40	45		descendants of the McAfee family for carrying on their family's
41	46		rich history and strong spirit and extend to them best wishes for
42	47		a joyous family reunion; and, be it further
43	48		RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
44	49		the family as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
