55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Each year, Americans set aside a special day to
77 honor those members of the U.S. military forces who gave their lives
88 in the line of duty; and
99 WHEREAS, Memorial Day originated in the years following the
1010 Civil War, when Americans held springtime tributes for soldiers who
1111 had been killed during the conflict, laying flowers on their graves
1212 and offering prayers; originally known as Decoration Day, the
1313 tradition expanded after World War I in order to recognize all
1414 military personnel who died in service to the country; in 1971, the
1515 federal government established Memorial Day as a national holiday,
1616 to be held annually on the last Monday in May; and
1717 WHEREAS, The toll of war has been a heavy one; since the
1818 founding of our republic, more than one million U.S. military
1919 personnel have died during wartime, and an even higher number have
2020 been wounded; thousands have endured extreme privation as prisoners
2121 of war, and thousands have been listed as missing in action; and
2222 WHEREAS, Throughout Texas, residents make a special effort to
2323 honor fallen service members; the loss of these valiant men and
2424 women is keenly felt not only by their loved ones but also by the
2525 communities in which they resided, as well as by all Texans who
2626 treasure the gift of freedom for which they fought; and
2727 WHEREAS, To those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in
2828 behalf of our country, we owe a debt that is truly beyond measure;
2929 while Memorial Day remains an essential and meaningful observance,
3030 its poignance can be amplified by officially designating the entire
3131 month of May in memory of those heroic individuals who gave all in
3232 service to their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas,
3434 2nd Called Session, hereby designate May as Memorial Month; and, be
3535 it further
3636 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
3737 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3838 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
3939 passed by the legislature.
