6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The members and staff of the Texas Legislature are |
---|
7 | 7 | | mourning the loss of a widely respected figure in the Capitol |
---|
8 | 8 | | community with the untimely passing of Tamoria R. Jones at the age |
---|
9 | 9 | | of 35; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The longtime chief of staff for State Representative |
---|
11 | 11 | | Harold V. Dutton Jr., Ms. Jones had played an instrumental role in |
---|
12 | 12 | | the operations of his office since 2012; she further distinguished |
---|
13 | 13 | | herself as the committee clerk for the House Urban Affairs |
---|
14 | 14 | | Committee during the 83rd Legislature, the Juvenile Justice and |
---|
15 | 15 | | Family Issues Committee during the 84th, 85th, 86th, and 88th |
---|
16 | 16 | | Legislatures, and the Public Education Committee during the 87th |
---|
17 | 17 | | Legislature; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In the course of her duties, Ms. Jones not only |
---|
19 | 19 | | mentored the members of Representative Dutton's staff but also |
---|
20 | 20 | | provided valuable guidance to personnel in numerous other offices; |
---|
21 | 21 | | moreover, her dedicated work in support of bills related to child |
---|
22 | 22 | | literacy and other pivotal issues was widely admired, and her |
---|
23 | 23 | | commitment to legislative service and her passion for improving the |
---|
24 | 24 | | lives of Texas residents were an inspiration to all who had the good |
---|
25 | 25 | | fortune to work alongside her; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Jones completed her undergraduate studies at |
---|
27 | 27 | | Prairie View A&M University in 2010 and went on to earn a master's |
---|
28 | 28 | | degree in business administration from Texas Woman's University in |
---|
29 | 29 | | 2012; she graduated with her juris doctor from the Thurgood |
---|
30 | 30 | | Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in 2018; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, State law stipulates in Section 2165.256, |
---|
32 | 32 | | Government Code, that a person specified in a concurrent resolution |
---|
33 | 33 | | adopted by the legislature is eligible for burial in the State |
---|
34 | 34 | | Cemetery if the State Cemetery Committee finds that the person has |
---|
35 | 35 | | made a significant contribution to Texas history and, based on that |
---|
36 | 36 | | finding, approves the person's burial; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of her outstanding contributions to |
---|
38 | 38 | | the Lone Star State through more than a decade of exemplary service |
---|
39 | 39 | | to the Texas House of Representatives, it is fitting that the family |
---|
40 | 40 | | of Tamoria Jones be allowed to designate the State Cemetery as her |
---|
41 | 41 | | final resting place; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas, |
---|
43 | 43 | | 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory of |
---|
44 | 44 | | Tamoria R. Jones and authorize her burial in the State Cemetery, |
---|
45 | 45 | | provided that the application for assignment of burial space is |
---|
46 | 46 | | approved by the State Cemetery Committee as required by law. |
