| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Dr. Rod Paige on the grand occasion of his 90th |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | birthday, which is being celebrated with a gathering of his |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | friends and family on June 17, 2023; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, An esteemed educator and administrator, Dr. Paige |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | served as the United States Secretary of Education from 2001 to |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | 2005 under President George W. Bush; he championed the No Child |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Left Behind Act and helped raise national standards of excellence |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | in public education; after his service as secretary of education, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | he held a position as a public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | International Center for Scholars; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Paige served as dean of the Texas Southern |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | University College of Education and as the superintendent of the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Houston Independent School District; he was the first African |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | American to serve in that position, and in 2001, the American |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Association of School Administrators named him as National |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Superintendent of the Year; his unique style of leadership and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | his innovative approach to education established him as a revered |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | figure in educational administration, and he has received many |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | awards and accolades for his professional accomplishments; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, A resident of Houston, Rod is a loving husband to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | his wife, Stephanie Nellons-Paige, and a proud father of his two |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | children; his wisdom, his generous spirit, and the enthusiasm |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | with which he approaches life are a source of inspiration to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | those around him, and his 90th birthday is indeed a fitting |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | occasion for his loved ones to express their admiration and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | affection; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby recognize Dr. Rod Paige |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | as a treasured citizen of the Lone Star State and extend to him |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | congratulations and best wishes on the joyous occasion of his |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | 90th birthday; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
