5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The city of Pearland lost a greatly admired civic |

6 | 6 | | leader with the passing of Mayor Emeritus Tom Reid on |
---|
7 | 7 | | June 24, 2023, at the age of 97; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Houston in 1925, Tom Reid was the son of |
---|
9 | 9 | | Thomas Joel and Hazel Nichols Reid; after proudly serving his |
---|
10 | 10 | | country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II, |
---|
11 | 11 | | he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from The |
---|
12 | 12 | | University of Texas in 1951, and as a student there, he held |
---|
13 | 13 | | membership in the Texas Cowboys and Chi Phi Fraternity; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1965, Mr. Reid moved to Pearland, where he |
---|
15 | 15 | | enjoyed a 32-year career as a contractor for NASA's Johnson Space |
---|
16 | 16 | | Center; over the course of his tenure with NASA, he was |
---|
17 | 17 | | responsible for overseeing and managing the budgets for the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Gemini, Apollo, Apollo-Soyuz, Skylab, and Space Shuttle |
---|
19 | 19 | | programs; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Reid served Pearland as mayor from 1978 to |
---|
21 | 21 | | 1990 and again from 1993 to 2020, and his long tenure coincided |
---|
22 | 22 | | with a number of major developments, including the expansion of |
---|
23 | 23 | | the city's western border and improvements to its public safety |
---|
24 | 24 | | services and parks and trails systems; during that time, Pearland |
---|
25 | 25 | | also experienced a significant increase in new businesses and |
---|
26 | 26 | | large residential properties that contributed to its economic |
---|
27 | 27 | | growth; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Reid's active involvement in the community |
---|
29 | 29 | | further included service as a city planning commissioner and as |
---|
30 | 30 | | chair of the Pearland Library board and Brazoria Drainage |
---|
31 | 31 | | District No. 4; an Eagle Scout, he also contributed to the Boy |
---|
32 | 32 | | Scouts organization as a scoutmaster and Scout Troop Committee |
---|
33 | 33 | | chair, and he volunteered his time in behalf of Pearland ISD, the |
---|
34 | 34 | | Pearland Historical Society, the Pearland Arts League, the C. F. |
---|
35 | 35 | | Spencer Masonic Lodge No. 1384, and other organizations; he was |
---|
36 | 36 | | the first citizen to be awarded the title of mayor emeritus, and |
---|
37 | 37 | | his outstanding record of service was further recognized with the |
---|
38 | 38 | | naming of a U.S. Post Office in his honor; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Reid enjoyed the love |
---|
40 | 40 | | and support of a fine family that included his two children, |
---|
41 | 41 | | Trisha and Carl, and his granddaughter, Nikki; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, The life of Tom Reid stands as an inspiring |
---|
43 | 43 | | example of the good that one person can accomplish, and he leaves |
---|
44 | 44 | | behind a legacy that will resonate in the Pearland community for |
---|
45 | 45 | | many years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
---|
48 | 48 | | of Mayor Emeritus Tom Reid and extend sincere sympathy to all |
---|
49 | 49 | | those who mourn his passing; and, be it further |
---|
50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
51 | 51 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
---|
52 | 52 | | this day, it do so in memory of Tom Reid. |
