| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Rio Grande Valley native Valery Tobias has compiled |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | an impressive list of accomplishments as a track and cross country |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | athlete; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Tobias first distinguished herself as a runner |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | during her four years at IDEA Quest Academy and College Prep in |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Edinburg; the daughter of Linda and Emilio Tobias, she won three |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | state titles in the 800-meter event for Class 3A and was the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | top-ranked high school runner at that distance in 2018; she also |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | finished fourth in the 400 meters and the high jump at the 2018 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | state meet and was a regional champion in cross country; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Following her graduation, Ms. Tobias went on to |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | compete at The University of Texas at Austin; as a Longhorn, she |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | captured several program records and won gold in the 1,000 meters at |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the 2023 Big 12 Indoor Championship; moreover, she was part of the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | distance medley relay team that won the 2020 Big 12 Women's Indoor |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | title and set a new school record; in 2022 and 2023, she was named to |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | All-American First Team in both the indoor and outdoor 800-meter |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | races, and she was selected to the All-Big 12 Academic First Team in |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 2020 and 2022; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Since concluding her collegiate career, Ms. Tobias |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | has joined the professional ranks by signing with the Brooks Beasts |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Track Club, and she is focusing on qualifying for the 2024 Summer |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Olympics in Paris; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Through her skill, determination, and commitment to |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | excellence, Valery Tobias has distinguished herself as one of the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | nation's premier middle distance runners, and she is a source of |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | great pride to her many supporters in the Rio Grande Valley; now, |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | therefore, be it |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Valery Tobias for her |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | achievements as a track and cross country athlete and extend to her |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
