44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
66 passing of Billy Howard Sherrill of Nacogdoches on July 16, 2023, at
77 the age of 91; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on July 4, 1932, in Batesville, Arkansas, to
99 Thomas Howard and Grace Martelia Aldridge Sherrill, Bill Sherrill
1010 grew up with the companionship of a sister, Margaret; he attended
1111 Harding Academy in Searcy, Arkansas, through high school, and he
1212 went on to earn a degree in physical education from Harding College;
1313 over the course of a varied career, he taught school, coached, ran a
1414 mail route, and served as a pilot for a number of physicians in the
1515 Fort Smith, Arkansas, area; he also received a master's degree in
1616 counseling from Stephen F. Austin State University on his way to
1717 becoming a licensed professional counselor; and
1818 WHEREAS, Mr. Sherrill's strong faith led him to pursue his
1919 calling as an ordained minister for the Church of Christ; he began
2020 preaching full time in Alma and Fort Smith, Arkansas, before
2121 serving as the pulpit minister for the North Street Church of Christ
2222 in Nacogdoches from 1965 to 1998 and subsequently as the church's
2323 family minister until the time of his passing; he was deeply
2424 committed to his congregation, and he set an inspiring example for
2525 others through his compassionate words and deeds; and
2626 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Sherrill enjoyed the
2727 support of the love of his life, Mary "Scotty" Sherrill, with whom
2828 he shared an extraordinary 70 years of marriage; the couple were
2929 blessed with 4 children, Terri, Mark, Kathy, and Hattie, as well as
3030 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; he relished such
3131 activities as flying, sailing, motorcycling, go-cart racing, and
3232 being out in nature, and he was known as an excellent storyteller
3333 through writing, song, and the spoken word; and
3434 WHEREAS, Bill Sherrill was beloved for his warmth and
3535 kindness, his unwavering faith, and his spirit of adventure, and he
3636 will forever hold a treasured place in the hearts of those he leaves
3737 behind; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3939 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4040 Billy Howard Sherrill and extend sincere sympathy to his family and
4141 many friends; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4343 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4444 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bill
4545 Sherrill.
