5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

6 | 6 | | passing of Billy Howard Sherrill of Nacogdoches on July 16, 2023, at |
---|
7 | 7 | | the age of 91; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born on July 4, 1932, in Batesville, Arkansas, to |
---|
9 | 9 | | Thomas Howard and Grace Martelia Aldridge Sherrill, Bill Sherrill |
---|
10 | 10 | | grew up with the companionship of a sister, Margaret; he attended |
---|
11 | 11 | | Harding Academy in Searcy, Arkansas, through high school, and he |
---|
12 | 12 | | went on to earn a degree in physical education from Harding College; |
---|
13 | 13 | | over the course of a varied career, he taught school, coached, ran a |
---|
14 | 14 | | mail route, and served as a pilot for a number of physicians in the |
---|
15 | 15 | | Fort Smith, Arkansas, area; he also received a master's degree in |
---|
16 | 16 | | counseling from Stephen F. Austin State University on his way to |
---|
17 | 17 | | becoming a licensed professional counselor; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sherrill's strong faith led him to pursue his |
---|
19 | 19 | | calling as an ordained minister for the Church of Christ; he began |
---|
20 | 20 | | preaching full time in Alma and Fort Smith, Arkansas, before |
---|
21 | 21 | | serving as the pulpit minister for the North Street Church of Christ |
---|
22 | 22 | | in Nacogdoches from 1965 to 1998 and subsequently as the church's |
---|
23 | 23 | | family minister until the time of his passing; he was deeply |
---|
24 | 24 | | committed to his congregation, and he set an inspiring example for |
---|
25 | 25 | | others through his compassionate words and deeds; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Sherrill enjoyed the |
---|
27 | 27 | | support of the love of his life, Mary "Scotty" Sherrill, with whom |
---|
28 | 28 | | he shared an extraordinary 70 years of marriage; the couple were |
---|
29 | 29 | | blessed with 4 children, Terri, Mark, Kathy, and Hattie, as well as |
---|
30 | 30 | | 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; he relished such |
---|
31 | 31 | | activities as flying, sailing, motorcycling, go-cart racing, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | being out in nature, and he was known as an excellent storyteller |
---|
33 | 33 | | through writing, song, and the spoken word; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Bill Sherrill was beloved for his warmth and |
---|
35 | 35 | | kindness, his unwavering faith, and his spirit of adventure, and he |
---|
36 | 36 | | will forever hold a treasured place in the hearts of those he leaves |
---|
37 | 37 | | behind; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
---|
40 | 40 | | Billy Howard Sherrill and extend sincere sympathy to his family and |
---|
41 | 41 | | many friends; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
43 | 43 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

44 | 44 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bill |
