5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Rose Brooks of San Marcos celebrated her 90th |
---|
6 | 6 | | birthday on August 18, 2023, to the great delight of her family and |
---|
7 | 7 | | friends; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in the rural community of Redwood in 1933, the |
---|
9 | 9 | | former Rose Lee Kirk is the daughter of Clint and Sophronia Kirk; |
---|
10 | 10 | | she grew up with six siblings, Clint, Wilbert, Wallace, Roy, Earl, |
---|
11 | 11 | | and Linda; when she was eight, her parents moved from their farm to |
---|
12 | 12 | | San Marcos in order to provide the children with a better education; |
---|
13 | 13 | | she attended what was known as San Marcos Colored School during |
---|
14 | 14 | | segregation and went on to become her family's first college |
---|
15 | 15 | | graduate; working her way through Huston-Tillotson University, she |
---|
16 | 16 | | earned a bachelor's degree in business; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Brooks taught at People's Business College |
---|
18 | 18 | | before embarking on a career in social services, initially with |
---|
19 | 19 | | Community Action, an agency created as part of President Lyndon |
---|
20 | 20 | | Baines Johnson's War on Poverty; as an outreach worker, she |
---|
21 | 21 | | connected people in need with important resources; later, she |
---|
22 | 22 | | joined Gary Job Corps Center and battled gender discrimination in |
---|
23 | 23 | | order to become a supervisor; she retired in 2000, following more |
---|
24 | 24 | | than three decades of service; over the years, she has further |
---|
25 | 25 | | benefited her fellow citizens as a member of the housing board and |
---|
26 | 26 | | various municipal committees, as well as such organizations as the |
---|
27 | 27 | | NAACP, the Women's Political Caucus, and the San Marcos Education |
---|
28 | 28 | | Foundation; she has also been very active in the Democratic Party, |
---|
29 | 29 | | serving as a precinct chair and delegate to state and national |
---|
30 | 30 | | conventions; a strong champion of education, she established a |
---|
31 | 31 | | scholarship program that has flourished for nearly a half century, |
---|
32 | 32 | | supported by a popular Juneteenth cake auction; her many honors |
---|
33 | 33 | | include the San Marcos Community Senior Citizen Volunteer Award; |
---|
34 | 34 | | and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Having reached a significant milestone, this |
---|
36 | 36 | | admired matriarch may indeed reflect with pride on her many |
---|
37 | 37 | | accomplishments and wide-ranging contributions to her community; |
---|
38 | 38 | | now, therefore, be it |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

40 | 40 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Rose Brooks on |

41 | 41 | | the joyous occasion of her 90th birthday and extend to her sincere |

42 | 42 | | best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |
