44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, All who shared in the life of William Murphey Black
66 Sr. of Ozona were deeply saddened by his passing on August 7, 2023,
77 at the age of 83; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Charles Sewell Black Jr. and Mary Jane
99 Murphey Black, Bill Black was born in Big Lake on April 22, 1940,
1010 and he grew up on his family's ranch with the companionship of his
1111 sister, Judy; he graduated from Ozona High School in 1958 and
1212 attended Texas Christian University, where he enrolled in the ranch
1313 management program; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Black married Susie Chandler on March 31, 1961,
1515 and the couple shared a fulfilling union that spanned 62 years; they
1616 became the proud parents of two children, Will and Sue Ellen, who
1717 preceded her father in death, and their family eventually grew to
1818 include five grandchildren, Murphey, Allie, Weslee, Wendy, and
1919 Whitney, and four great-grandchildren, Brit, Bodie, Maddie, and
2020 Maysen; and
2121 WHEREAS, A lifelong rancher, Mr. Black worked livestock in
2222 Crockett, Pecos, Terrell, and Val Verde Counties, and for several
2323 years, he bought and sold sheep and goats from ranchers in the area
2424 and sent them all over the United States; in addition to ranching,
2525 he owned and operated Ozona Storage and Encino RV Park with his
2626 wife; and
2727 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Black served as
2828 Crockett County commissioner for six years, and he gave generously
2929 of his time and talents to the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers
3030 Association, the American Sheep Industry Association, and the Texas
3131 and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association; he was one of the
3232 original directors of the Crockett National Bank and a valued
3333 member of Ozona United Methodist Church; known for his tremendous
3434 work ethic and wonderful sense of humor, he enjoyed sharing stories
3535 and good conversation with friends, loved ones, and strangers
3636 alike, and in his younger years, he took pleasure in hunting,
3737 fishing, and team roping; and
3838 WHEREAS, Although Bill Black is greatly missed, he has left
3939 his family and friends with a wealth of memories that they will
4040 forever treasure; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4242 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4343 William Murphey Black Sr. and extend sincere condolences to all who
4444 mourn his passing; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4747 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bill Black.
