5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Rear Admiral Samuel Perez Jr., a survivor of the |

6 | 6 | | terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, has rendered outstanding |

7 | 7 | | service to his country throughout his tenure in the U.S. Navy; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Perez Jr. entered the United States Naval |
---|
9 | 9 | | Academy in 1976, and he graduated in 1980 with a bachelor's degree |
---|
10 | 10 | | in political science; after being commissioned as an officer, he |
---|
11 | 11 | | attended basic training in Coronado, California; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, At sea, Rear Admiral Perez served aboard several |
---|
13 | 13 | | ships, and he took command of the USS Reclaimer, the USS Vincennes, |
---|
14 | 14 | | and Destroyer Squadron 15; during his tour as commander of Carrier |
---|
15 | 15 | | Strike Group One, he completed a 5th Fleet deployment to support |

16 | 16 | | Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn; his assignments while |

17 | 17 | | ashore have included leadership positions with the Ballistic |
---|
18 | 18 | | Missile Defense Organization, the Chief of Naval Operations, and |

19 | 19 | | the Joint Chiefs of Staff; in the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, |

20 | 20 | | he served as chief of staff and deputy commander of the 5th Fleet; |

22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, During his tenure as deputy assistant secretary, |

23 | 23 | | Rear Admiral Perez provided executive leadership for |

24 | 24 | | U.S. government global security assistance programs and policies; |

26 | 26 | | of Defense, and he gained extensive operational experience in Far |

27 | 27 | | East Asia and the Arabian Gulf region; his other commands included |

28 | 28 | | the Joint Task Force-Port Opening and the effort to reconstruct the |

29 | 29 | | Port-au-Prince port following the 2010 Haiti earthquake; and |

30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In 2010, while in command of Carrier Strike Group |

31 | 31 | | One, Rear Admiral Perez assumed command of Carrier Task Force Five |

32 | 32 | | Zero, and he conducted missions in support of sensitive national |

33 | 33 | | tasking, theater security cooperation, intelligence collection, |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Rear Admiral Samuel Perez has set an inspiring |

37 | 37 | | example of leadership, dedication, and integrity throughout his |

38 | 38 | | career in the military, and his contributions have earned him the |

39 | 39 | | lasting gratitude of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

41 | 41 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Rear Admiral Samuel |

42 | 42 | | Perez Jr. for his distinguished military service and extend to him |
