44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The life of a renowned Dallas photographer drew to a
66 close with the passing of James T. Bradley on October 13, 2023, at
77 the age of 101; and
88 WHEREAS, "Brad" Bradley was born to Mabel and Dennis Bradley
99 on July 23, 1922, and he grew up on a cotton farm near Arlington;
1010 after studying business at North Texas Agricultural College, he
1111 served as a technical sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Corps in
1212 Okinawa, Japan, during World War II; in 1946, he exchanged vows with
1313 the former Betty Laughead; they shared 64 years together before her
1414 death in 2010 and raised two children, Iris and James; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Bradley opened Laughead Photography in
1616 Dallas, and in 1948 Mr. Bradley photographed the Cotton Bowl
1717 matchup between Southern Methodist and Penn State Universities;
1818 that experience began his long-lasting relationship with the bowl
1919 game and SMU, and he also worked with college football programs
2020 nationwide and at the NFL level; he and his father-in-law, Jim
2121 Laughead, traveled together, documenting games and athletes and
2222 pioneering the "Huck 'n Buck" posed action shot that became a staple
2323 of football photography; over a career of 75-plus years, he
2424 captured such college and professional luminaries as Doak Walker,
2525 Earl Campbell, Roger Staubach, Dick Butkus, and Joe Montana, and he
2626 also produced images for Topps baseball cards; and
2727 WHEREAS, Widely respected, Mr. Bradley was inducted into the
2828 Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame, received the SMU Athletics Hall of
2929 Fame Legends Award, and garnered the 2023 Governor's Award for
3030 Lifetime Achievement by the Lone Star chapter of the Regional EMMY
3131 Awards; moreover, he was honored as the 2019 Citizen of the Year in
3232 the Park Cities community, where he resided; and
3333 WHEREAS, Admired for his immense talent and his kind and
3434 generous nature, "Brad" Bradley chronicled countless events at SMU
3535 as well as sports figures and competitions throughout the U.S., and
3636 in so doing, he created a rich and compelling visual record that
3737 will endure for years to come; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3939 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
4040 of James T. Bradley and extend deepest condolences to the members of
4141 his family: to his children, Iris L. Bradley and her husband, Floyd,
4242 and James T. "Jimmy" Bradley II; to his granddaughter, Susan
4343 Gleiser; to his nieces and nephews; and to all who mourn his
4444 passing; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4747 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Brad
4848 Bradley.
