| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Sunset Elementary School of the Dumas Independent |

| 6 | 6 | | School District has been named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School, |

| 7 | 7 | | one of the most prestigious designations an elementary or secondary |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | school in the United States can receive; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was created |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | by the U.S. Department of Education in 1982 to recognize campuses |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | that have demonstrated superior academic performance or made |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | notable progress in improving outcomes among economically |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | disadvantaged students; Sunset Elementary was one of only 353 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | public and private schools nationwide and 29 schools in Texas to |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | have earned this impressive honor in 2023; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of principal Caynon |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Strickland, Sunset Elementary serves approximately 340 students |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | from prekindergarten through fourth grade; the school has a very |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | diverse student body, which includes a large proportion of |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | economically disadvantaged students and students who are learning |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | English as a second language, and its faculty members are committed |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | to ensuring that each child receives a high-quality education that |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | transcends socioeconomic and language barriers; the school has made |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | tremendous progress over the past five years, and it currently |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | holds an "A" accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Through hard work and perseverance, the teachers and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | students of Sunset Elementary have established a record of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | scholastic excellence, and their outstanding efforts have been duly |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | recognized with the Blue Ribbon School award; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Sunset |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Elementary School on its selection as a 2023 National Blue Ribbon |

| 34 | 34 | | School by the U.S. Department of Education and extend to all those |

| 35 | 35 | | involved with the school sincere best wishes for the future; and, be |
