55 WHEREAS, Head football coach Tim Buchanan and athletic
66 director and former coach Steve Wood retired from the Aledo
77 Independent School District in 2023 after having guided the Aledo
88 Bearcats to a total of 11 state titles, setting the University
99 Interscholastic League record for the most football championships;
1010 and
1111 WHEREAS, Tim Buchanan arrived at Aledo in 1993, and his
1212 successful efforts to build a winning culture for the football
1313 program transformed the Bearcats into a powerhouse; during the 25
1414 years that he coached the team, Aledo won eight state
1515 championships, and the Bearcats added three more titles during the
1616 five-year period when he stepped away from coaching to serve as
1717 athletic director before returning to the sidelines in 2019; his
1818 final championship victory came on December 17, 2022, when Aledo
1919 defeated College Station High School in the 5A Division 1 state
2020 final; with the win, Coach Buchanan closed out his career with a
2121 281-58-3 ledger; and
2222 WHEREAS, Coach Buchanan first joined the coaching ranks in
2323 1984 as an assistant at Bastrop High School, and he later held
2424 assistant positions at Killeen Ellison, The Colony, and A&M
2525 Consolidated High Schools, the latter of which claimed the 1991 4A
2626 state title during his tenure; one of the most respected figures in
2727 the game, he was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches
2828 Association Hall of Honor in July 2023; and
2929 WHEREAS, Steve Wood joined the Aledo High faculty in 2002 as
3030 the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the football
3131 team, working under the direction of Coach Buchanan; over the next
3232 two decades, he played an instrumental role in the Bearcats'
3333 phenomenal success; after helping the team win four state crowns
3434 during his tenure as assistant head coach, he served as head coach
3535 from 2014 through 2018, guiding his players to three state
3636 championships in four title game appearances and racking up 75 wins
3737 against only 4 losses; in 2019, he concluded his coaching
3838 responsibilities to become the district's athletic director, and
3939 during the next four years, he provided essential support to the
4040 team as it made three more state championship runs; and
4141 WHEREAS, Earlier in his career, Mr. Wood distinguished
4242 himself as a teacher and as a football, basketball, track, and
4343 powerlifting coach; beginning in 1981, he was employed at Calhoun
4444 High School in Port Lavaca, and he went on to work at J. Frank Dobie
4545 High School in Houston and at Boswell High School in Fort Worth; and
4646 WHEREAS, Architects of a gridiron dynasty at Aledo High
4747 School, Tim Buchanan and Steve Wood set a new standard for coaching
4848 excellence in Texas high school football, and their achievements
4949 will resonate for years to come; now, therefore, be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
5151 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Tim Buchanan
5252 and Steve Wood for leading the Aledo High School football team to a
5353 UIL record 11 state championships and extend to them sincere best
5454 wishes for the future; and, be it further
5555 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5656 prepared for Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Wood as an expression of high
5757 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
