5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their |

6 | 6 | | memories of Dr. Jerry Ronald Payne Sr. of Hallsville, who passed |
---|
7 | 7 | | away on July 17, 2023, at the age of 87; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Luther Maldon Payne and Opal Donnis |
---|
9 | 9 | | Dulany, Jerry Payne was born in Dodson, Louisiana, on December |
---|
10 | 10 | | 10, 1935; following his graduation from Bolton High School, he |
---|
11 | 11 | | attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, |
---|
12 | 12 | | Louisiana, where he went on to earn his bachelor's, master's, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | doctoral degrees; he married the love of his life, the former |
---|
14 | 14 | | Marilyn Delaine Pippen, on August 24, 1957, and the couple shared |
---|
15 | 15 | | a fulfilling marriage that spanned nearly six decades until her |
---|
16 | 16 | | passing in 2014; they became the parents of 5 children, Mal, |
---|
17 | 17 | | Ronnie, Donnis, Melissa, and Jeannie, and they later knew the joy |
---|
18 | 18 | | of welcoming into their treasured family 15 grandchildren, Jon, |
---|
19 | 19 | | Amy, Jacob, Jonah, Grant, Morgan, Katherine, Michael, Coby, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Melody, Abby, Lily, Jaxon, Bronwyn, and Charlotte, and 2 |
---|
21 | 21 | | great-grandchildren, Rayden and Isabel; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Payne embarked on his distinguished career in |
---|
23 | 23 | | music education as a band director at Alexandria Junior High, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | after a stint at Alexandria Senior High, he returned to |
---|
25 | 25 | | Northwestern State to serve as director of bands; during this |
---|
26 | 26 | | time, he also served his country in the United States Army |
---|
27 | 27 | | National Guard and was called to active duty during the Berlin |
---|
28 | 28 | | Crisis of 1961; in 1977, he accepted the band director position |
---|
29 | 29 | | in Marshall, and under his able leadership, the Marshall High |
---|
30 | 30 | | School "Big Red Pride" Band earned numerous honors; he retired in |
---|
31 | 31 | | 2002 after more than 45 years as a music educator; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Dr. Payne devoted |
---|
33 | 33 | | himself to caring for his wife throughout her battle with |
---|
34 | 34 | | Parkinson's disease; in his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling, |
---|
35 | 35 | | cheering on the Texas Rangers, and spending time with his family |
---|
36 | 36 | | and friends, and he continued his passion for music by giving |
---|
37 | 37 | | private lessons and performing as a saxophone player; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Jerry Payne lived a life that was rich in personal |
---|
39 | 39 | | and professional achievements, and he will forever be a source of |
---|
40 | 40 | | inspiration to those he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
---|
43 | 43 | | of Dr. Jerry Ronald Payne Sr. and extend sincere sympathy to all |
---|
44 | 44 | | who mourn his passing; and, be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
46 | 46 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
---|
47 | 47 | | this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Jerry Payne. |
