11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 64
22 WHEREAS, The prosperity of the Lone Star State has been
33 greatly influenced by family farming and ranching, and the
44 Wallace Farm in Bell County has been officially recognized for
55 its role in this proud tradition with its acceptance into the
66 state's Family Land Heritage Program in 2023; and
77 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture,
88 this program honors farms and ranches that have been in
99 continuous agricultural operation by the same family for a
1010 century or more; established in 1873, the Wallace Farm is
1111 currently owned and operated by Laura W. Bergin and Christine W.
1212 Stockwell; and
1313 WHEREAS, The farm's founder, John Armstrong Wallace, was a
1414 native of Tennessee who moved with his family to Texas as a child;
1515 in 1873, he and his wife, Amanda Wallace, acquired 280 acres of
1616 land; there, they built their home and developed a ranch and
1717 farm, where they raised livestock and grew cotton, corn, oats,
1818 and wheat; they became the parents of 11 children, several of
1919 whom remained on the land; after the elder Mr. Wallace's passing
2020 in 1948, ownership of the farm was transferred to his youngest
2121 son, Wofford Garrison Wallace, who resided there and continued to
2222 raise livestock and cultivate crops on the property alongside his
2323 sisters, Amanda and Anna Belle; and
2424 WHEREAS, Wofford Wallace passed away in 1972, and his older
2525 brother, Henry Clay Wallace, assumed ownership of the farm, which
2626 was subsequently divided between his sons, Henry and Joseph;
2727 since the death of Henry Wallace Jr. in 2014, his daughters Laura
2828 and Christine have tended to the remaining 140 acres, where they
2929 currently grow corn; and
3030 WHEREAS, In preserving their property as a working farm,
3131 Laura Bergin and Christine Stockwell are making their own
3232 contribution to their family's legacy, and it is indeed fitting
3333 that they be honored for their outstanding stewardship; now,
3434 therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3636 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Laura W.
3737 Bergin and Christine W. Stockwell on the induction of the Wallace
3838 Farm into the Texas Department of Agriculture Family Land
3939 Heritage Program and extend to them sincere best wishes for the
4040 future; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4242 prepared for Ms. Bergin and Ms. Stockwell as an expression of
4343 high regard from the Texas Senate.
