2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The prosperity of the Lone Star State has been |

3 | 3 | | greatly influenced by family farming and ranching, and the |
---|
4 | 4 | | Wallace Farm in Bell County has been officially recognized for |
---|
5 | 5 | | its role in this proud tradition with its acceptance into the |
---|
6 | 6 | | state's Family Land Heritage Program in 2023; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture, |
---|
8 | 8 | | this program honors farms and ranches that have been in |
---|
9 | 9 | | continuous agricultural operation by the same family for a |
---|
10 | 10 | | century or more; established in 1873, the Wallace Farm is |
---|
11 | 11 | | currently owned and operated by Laura W. Bergin and Christine W. |
---|
12 | 12 | | Stockwell; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The farm's founder, John Armstrong Wallace, was a |
---|
14 | 14 | | native of Tennessee who moved with his family to Texas as a child; |
---|
15 | 15 | | in 1873, he and his wife, Amanda Wallace, acquired 280 acres of |
---|
16 | 16 | | land; there, they built their home and developed a ranch and |
---|
17 | 17 | | farm, where they raised livestock and grew cotton, corn, oats, |
---|
18 | 18 | | and wheat; they became the parents of 11 children, several of |
---|
19 | 19 | | whom remained on the land; after the elder Mr. Wallace's passing |
---|
20 | 20 | | in 1948, ownership of the farm was transferred to his youngest |
---|
21 | 21 | | son, Wofford Garrison Wallace, who resided there and continued to |
---|
22 | 22 | | raise livestock and cultivate crops on the property alongside his |
---|
23 | 23 | | sisters, Amanda and Anna Belle; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Wofford Wallace passed away in 1972, and his older |
---|
25 | 25 | | brother, Henry Clay Wallace, assumed ownership of the farm, which |
---|
26 | 26 | | was subsequently divided between his sons, Henry and Joseph; |
---|
27 | 27 | | since the death of Henry Wallace Jr. in 2014, his daughters Laura |
---|
28 | 28 | | and Christine have tended to the remaining 140 acres, where they |
---|
29 | 29 | | currently grow corn; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In preserving their property as a working farm, |
---|
31 | 31 | | Laura Bergin and Christine Stockwell are making their own |
---|
32 | 32 | | contribution to their family's legacy, and it is indeed fitting |
---|
33 | 33 | | that they be honored for their outstanding stewardship; now, |
---|
34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |

35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby congratulate Laura W. |

37 | 37 | | Bergin and Christine W. Stockwell on the induction of the Wallace |

38 | 38 | | Farm into the Texas Department of Agriculture Family Land |

39 | 39 | | Heritage Program and extend to them sincere best wishes for the |
