11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 70
22 WHEREAS, Austin College is kicking off the celebration of
33 its 175th academic year during the fall 2023 semester; and
44 WHEREAS, The oldest college in Texas operating under its
55 original charter and name, the school was established in
66 Huntsville in 1849 by Dr. Daniel Baker, a Princeton-educated
77 Presbyterian missionary; two presidents of the Republic of
88 Texas, Sam Houston and Anson Jones, served on the original board
99 of trustees; the institution was named after "the Father of
1010 Texas," Stephen F. Austin, and funded by a gift from his sister,
1111 Emily; and
1212 WHEREAS, Records indicate that the first graduating class
1313 in 1854 was comprised of two students; the early years were full
1414 of challenges, with the Civil War, a rocky economy, and three
1515 yellow fever epidemics that swept through the city; as a result,
1616 Austin College moved to Sherman in 1876; it began to admit women
1717 in 1918, and in 1930, it merged with a women's school, Texas
1818 Presbyterian College; and
1919 WHEREAS, Beginning in the postwar years, Austin College
2020 extensively reviewed the traditional liberal arts curriculum and
2121 explored innovations; in 1972, it adopted a comprehensive
2222 educational program that has continued to shape much of the
2323 academic development in the ensuing years; the next decade
2424 brought a new master plan, and iconic Sherman Hall underwent a
2525 $1.37 million renovation; and
2626 WHEREAS, The college celebrated its sesquicentennial in
2727 1999 and signaled its ongoing commitment to progress through a
2828 $120 million campaign; it experienced record enrollment as it
2929 continued its tradition of excellence; in 2009, the school
3030 welcomed its first female president, Dr. Marjorie Hass, and
3131 since 2017, it has been ably led by its 16th president, Steven P.
3232 O'Day; the current enrollment of 1,300 includes students from
3333 Texas and 13 other states, as well as Mexico, Germany, the United
3434 Kingdom, Thailand, and Vietnam; while maintaining its covenant
3535 relationship with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the campus
3636 offers a nonsectarian education that fosters understanding of
3737 the world's many religious, philosophical, and cultural
3838 traditions; and
3939 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, this noteworthy
4040 institution has provided young scholars with a rich environment
4141 for personal and intellectual growth, preparing them to make a
4242 positive difference in Texas and the world beyond; now,
4343 therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4545 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 175th
4646 academic year of Austin College and extend to all those
4747 associated with this noteworthy institution sincere best wishes
4848 for the future; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5050 prepared for the college as an expression of high regard from the
5151 Texas Senate.
