2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Austin College is kicking off the celebration of |

3 | 3 | | its 175th academic year during the fall 2023 semester; and |
---|
4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, The oldest college in Texas operating under its |
---|
5 | 5 | | original charter and name, the school was established in |
---|
6 | 6 | | Huntsville in 1849 by Dr. Daniel Baker, a Princeton-educated |
---|
7 | 7 | | Presbyterian missionary; two presidents of the Republic of |
---|
8 | 8 | | Texas, Sam Houston and Anson Jones, served on the original board |
---|
9 | 9 | | of trustees; the institution was named after "the Father of |
---|
10 | 10 | | Texas," Stephen F. Austin, and funded by a gift from his sister, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Emily; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Records indicate that the first graduating class |
---|
13 | 13 | | in 1854 was comprised of two students; the early years were full |
---|
14 | 14 | | of challenges, with the Civil War, a rocky economy, and three |
---|
15 | 15 | | yellow fever epidemics that swept through the city; as a result, |
---|
16 | 16 | | Austin College moved to Sherman in 1876; it began to admit women |
---|
17 | 17 | | in 1918, and in 1930, it merged with a women's school, Texas |
---|
18 | 18 | | Presbyterian College; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Beginning in the postwar years, Austin College |
---|
20 | 20 | | extensively reviewed the traditional liberal arts curriculum and |
---|
21 | 21 | | explored innovations; in 1972, it adopted a comprehensive |
---|
22 | 22 | | educational program that has continued to shape much of the |
---|
23 | 23 | | academic development in the ensuing years; the next decade |
---|
24 | 24 | | brought a new master plan, and iconic Sherman Hall underwent a |
---|
25 | 25 | | $1.37 million renovation; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The college celebrated its sesquicentennial in |
---|
27 | 27 | | 1999 and signaled its ongoing commitment to progress through a |
---|
28 | 28 | | $120 million campaign; it experienced record enrollment as it |
---|
29 | 29 | | continued its tradition of excellence; in 2009, the school |
---|
30 | 30 | | welcomed its first female president, Dr. Marjorie Hass, and |
---|
31 | 31 | | since 2017, it has been ably led by its 16th president, Steven P. |
---|
32 | 32 | | O'Day; the current enrollment of 1,300 includes students from |
---|
33 | 33 | | Texas and 13 other states, as well as Mexico, Germany, the United |
---|
34 | 34 | | Kingdom, Thailand, and Vietnam; while maintaining its covenant |
---|
35 | 35 | | relationship with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the campus |
---|
36 | 36 | | offers a nonsectarian education that fosters understanding of |
---|
37 | 37 | | the world's many religious, philosophical, and cultural |
---|
38 | 38 | | traditions; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, this noteworthy |
---|
40 | 40 | | institution has provided young scholars with a rich environment |
---|
41 | 41 | | for personal and intellectual growth, preparing them to make a |
---|
42 | 42 | | positive difference in Texas and the world beyond; now, |
---|
43 | 43 | | therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
45 | 45 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 175th |
---|
46 | 46 | | academic year of Austin College and extend to all those |
---|
47 | 47 | | associated with this noteworthy institution sincere best wishes |
---|
48 | 48 | | for the future; and, be it further |

49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

50 | 50 | | prepared for the college as an expression of high regard from the |
