| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Joel C. Harris Middle School in the San Antonio |

| 3 | 3 | | Independent School District is celebrating its 100th anniversary |

| 4 | 4 | | in 2023; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Named for American journalist, fiction writer, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | and folklorist Joel Chandler Harris, the campus was first |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | established as Joel Chandler Harris Junior School; it began |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | operating in September 1923, though classes were initially held |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | at a nearby elementary campus until construction was completed |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | two months later on the new six-classroom building; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The school experienced a period of significant |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | growth during the 1940s and 1950s, and following a major |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | renovation project in the early 2000s, its campus more than |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | doubled in size; the renovations added numerous classrooms, two |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | gyms, and a football and soccer field, as well as a larger library |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and cafeteria; moreover, the former gym was converted to a fine |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | arts building; the newly renovated campus was dedicated in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | October 2004, and further upgrades, including the addition of a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | STEM lab, were completed in 2016; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, Joel C. Harris Middle School is an |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | International Baccalaureate school that provides students in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | grades six through eight with a challenging educational program and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | a broad range of extracurricular activities; the campus benefits |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | from the outstanding efforts of its faculty and staff and the able |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | leadership of its current principal, John Hilliard; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, For the past century, Joel C. Harris Middle |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | School has provided its students with a strong educational |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | foundation on which to build, and it has made a positive and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | lasting difference in the lives of generations of San Antonio |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | residents; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 100th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | anniversary of Joel C. Harris Middle School and extend to all |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | those associated with the campus sincere best wishes for the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |

| 37 | 37 | | prepared for the school as an expression of high regard from the |
