3 | 3 | | Kickoff for U.S. Army Corporal Duane McGhghy on November 18, |

5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Since 2004, HFOT has built more than 360 fully |

6 | 6 | | accessible custom homes nationwide for seriously injured |
---|
7 | 7 | | veterans; each house features over 40 adaptations that help |
---|
8 | 8 | | facilitate independent living, such as wider halls and doorways, |
---|
9 | 9 | | automatic door openers, roll-under sinks, stovetops, and |
---|
10 | 10 | | counters, and pull-down shelving; the nonprofit also provides |
---|
11 | 11 | | veterans with financial planning assistance, homeownership |
---|
12 | 12 | | education, and home warranty coverage; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The Community Kickoff event marks the start of |
---|
14 | 14 | | construction on a four-bedroom, two-bath home for Corporal |
---|
15 | 15 | | McGhghy; during a deployment to Iraq in 2007, Corporal McGhghy |
---|
16 | 16 | | was serving as a member of Delta Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, |
---|
17 | 17 | | 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, when his vehicle |
---|
18 | 18 | | was hit by an explosively formed penetrator; he was severely |
---|
19 | 19 | | wounded as a result of the blast, losing his left leg below the |
---|
20 | 20 | | knee and sustaining a traumatic brain injury; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, With the help of a prosthesis and a wheelchair, |
---|
22 | 22 | | Corporal McGhghy has continued to enjoy an active lifestyle; he |
---|
23 | 23 | | dedicates his efforts to giving back to his fellow veterans, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | he rides motorcycles with the Road Warrior Foundation and goes |
---|
25 | 25 | | skydiving with Jump For Valor, two organizations that support the |
---|
26 | 26 | | military community; moreover, he and his wife, Cortney, operate |
---|
27 | 27 | | their own business, Hey Darlin Plants; they are the proud parents |
---|
28 | 28 | | of three children, Austin, Chloe, and Oliver; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Homes For Our Troops is helping to equip injured |
---|
30 | 30 | | veterans with the resources they need to build productive and |
---|
31 | 31 | | fulfilling lives, and Corporal Duane McGhghy's new home is sure |
---|
32 | 32 | | to serve him and his family well in the years to come; now, |
---|
33 | 33 | | therefore, be it |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
